In order to determine how having an advance care directive in place affected the quality of an individual's death, researchers from Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Ghent University conducted an analysis of 200 nursing home residents who had dementia when they died. While only 17.5 percent of the men and women in the study had a written advanced directive, those residents with end-of-life care instructions in place were three times less likely to experience fear and anxiety in their last days than those who didn't. This study highlights the importance of finding opportunities to discuss important financial, medical, and end-of-life concerns. Create peace of mind for yourself and your family by completing the crucial step of creating advance care directives.
