My husband just turned 70 and has low to moderate Alzheimers. He gets upset when I occasionally work and leave him alone. Not sure if adult daycare is the right answer. He is able to function on his own.

They can start at age 21 when they age out at school. Usually the groups are broken down by age and level of understanding. MOST, but not all day-habs will take Medicaid recipients. They need to interview and evaluate the client to see if they can meet their needs. Most do not offer transport, you arrange that on your own.

Tammy, I'm a nurse at an Adult day Services center. I like to describe the center I work at , as an adult activity center. We provide mental or physical stimulation all day. For the seniors (and now a 49 year old) our center gives these people a purpose. They come to see their friends and have fun. Most people with dementia forget how to plan their day, we do that. Now they or the family doesn't have to worry about keeping them active and safe, we do that. So in general I think people that start "joining" an adult day center sooner in the dementia journey do better because they start getting used to the routine and people before the cognitive decline gets bad. For some people if you wait too long they become afraid when you leave them; remember they trust you. When you find a center that is a fit, your husband has a chance to bond with someone there, an employee or other Participant. It gives them something to look forward to, a purpose to their day. Hope you find a place as great as mine!

I'm in the Lansing MI area. Most are $13/hour (private pay). Some people qualify for VA benefits, your local county on aging or long term care insurance. We recommend the potential participant and 1 or 2 family members visit us for 2 hours (chair exercise class, small groups & lunch) to get an idea of what we are like and to answer individual questions like this
