trying to tie moms money up to get her medicaid ready, it really sucks, her money is her security blanket! I have one week left to get it done! thats not alot, I am trying to get her to go beserk spending on all the things she wants, or has always wanted............I know she loves to paint, so we definetely will be going to the art store! we bought her clothes already, today an HD tv, that she can see, with a dvd player, not like the one she has which is ancient. Anyone have any ideas of what else we can get her??? Its so hard to reason with her about her spending down her money fast like this but thank god she understands why! after all is said and done she will have a total of 35.00 dollars a month to buy things for herself, that is pretty darn tight! It makes me so sad to have to do all this crap, so fast, just so the stupid government, will give her medcaid!!!! she keeps mentioning about buying me a new car, as mine is very old and on its last leg, but I dont want her to spend one dime on me!!! SHe has already helped me to the limit, and no way will I take one more cent from mom. I need ideas please! dont have time

It sounds like you are getting the proper help to do this right. It's good that she's not buying you a car - that would count as giving away her assets. Buying her plenty of clothes and then storing some of them so she has fresh new things could be good.

Hang tight.

Could she use medical supplies like blood pressure monitor, walker/scooter, or cane. Will she ever be staying the night with you? Could she use an intercom system or baby monitor. How about ensure, bed pads or depends. Not to be morbid but have you purchased burial plots\plans.

Personal care items such as Kleenex, maybe books ,or puzzles, dvds, cds. I bought a good clock radio dvd player for my mom. , Does she want to shop for Christmas presents for family in June? or is this allowed. Blankets bedding, or pajamas, slippers. I don't think you can have too many cozy pjs.

How about one of those nice chairs that help you to standing position? Stocking up on supplies/items she will need in the future seems like a good investment since her funds will be so limited. The burial arrangement idea sounds good. You'd be taking care of two issues at once.

Just keep good records of what is spent because you will need to provide that when applieing for medicaide prepaying for a funeral is allowed also the chair is a good idea and make sure you get help with the application because it is very hard I would think paying a lawyer could be paid with her money I had to pay a retainer of 5 hrs. to a lawyer to help me-do not be pressured into doing it yourself I broke down in the social workers office and she help me-he died before it was completed but I spent 3 weeks on it and was just getting started-it is very hard to do.

Will she be living at home or at an ALF? If the ALF, then you can pay some ahead. If she will be going to daycare, maybe some of that can be paid ahead too. Here's the thing: they pay from approval in FL, not from date of Application.
If Dad was a veteran, be sure to check into VA survivor's Benefits, called Aids and Attendants Benefit - it's valid for the widow too, at lower amt monthly AND Medicaid Must Ignore it when qualifying her for that, so she can get both.

Pre-need funeral & cemetery contracts are a great way to spend-down. If you make it Irrevocable then MedicAid will not be able to count it as an asset.

thanks for the advice, I think I have it all taken care of, after I paid her taxes that she owed the IRS, she really has hardly nothing left!!! Its so sad, she also lost alot of money in investements that went bad etc,,,,,,,,,,,so doing what I can with whats left, like paying lawyers, and paying for her burial plot, etc..........I am just doing exactly what the lawyer tells me to..............I dont care anymore about the money, I care about my sanity, which is slowly wavering............thanks for taking the time to care

PRE-PAID FUNERAL EXPENSES/PLANS!!! AND DON'T FORGET THE HEAD STONE. This will take at least $8,000.00. Do it now and it will spare the family all the "how would she have wanted it worries"

The headstone was a great idea my husband died before I got the medicaide application finished but my lawyer and the social worker at the nursing home were very helpful we really need to work on people running for office while they are resceptive to making changes it is not fair to leave the well or not so well spouse who is home in such straites I would have had very little money to live on and my husband was responsible for running up debts and now that he has died those irresponsible spending habits now belong to me and that is not fair his debts should have but forgiven just as if he were a parent who died their debts are not handed down to the children-I should have gotten a divorce as I wanted to do all my years for being his servent and most of the time my health was worse than his but I carried on,

That is exactly what I did!! and u are right, she is very pleased with my choices, and when things finally get to that point, all will be taken care of, and we wont have to diddle with that crap, at such a sad and depressing time! Thanks for your support as always!!!! oh, and just to tell u, she has a plot right next to her deseased husband, and is letting me write my own words of endearnent on her stone, that made me so so happy and I am already thinking of things to say.........they dont give u alot of allowance for alot of words at all, but with the few I have to work with I will make sure they say a multitude! when I have come up with the finalized decision I will let u all know what I decided to write!!!

Like all of the posts above, how about a small refrigerator, a good small TV, recliner, nice bright lamp, my mom has low vision, couple of pillows and bedspreads of their liking, stocking up on their goodies...my mom still smokes and at 86 she doesn't plan on stopping! Although, to many it may seem odd that you are excited about this journey but I for one appreciate your positive outlook and hope your Mom does too! Please let us know how things turned out..I'm in the midst of doing the same for my Mom. just courious...how'd you determine the "one week" spend down deadline?

Definitely stock up on any health care items she uses now and may need in future, clothing and art supplies could make a dent.
