My 90 yo Mother was taken to hospital with a dx of UTI but had a temp of 91 degrees. Was sent back to nursing home after course of IV Cipro. Back in hospital 2 days later with same symptoms except with the "I 'm going bonkers" issue, and again low temp and bp. At this point I was called to come home, I live 1600 miles away. She was returned to intermediate care at nursing home and appears stable..some incontinence. The hypothermia is the odd man out. Any thoughts?

my father had a UTI last year. we didnt know what was wrong, his temp was low and he was hallucinating and seeing things. It freaked us out, called the ambulance and was in the hospital for 12 hours and was admitted before they determined it was a UTI. I had never heard of such symptoms from a UTI before, so I wouldnt doubt that it causes low temp and much more.

After reading about some causes I should have been more specific talking about my father. His temp and bp dropped in the weeks before he died. His appetite also went to near nothing. It is not common for older people to have low temp and bp until they are looking at their final days on earth. If your mother is stable now, her vitals may go back up. Hopeful thoughts coming your way, Katz4me.

My father's temperature and blood pressure dropped when he aged. Temperature comes from diet, metabolism, and activity, so often it goes down when a person becomes old. Often bp often drops, impairing the amount of blood getting to the head and extremities. Chances are that your mother feels cold, so should be wrapped warmly. I have not heard of these things happening because of UTI, so suspect it is because of her age. However, I could be wrong.

It sounds like the UTI spread into your mother's blood system causing sepsis which will lower body temperature. Keep a watch on her that she is responding to treatment. Sepsis from an infection is very serious.
