Find Care & Housing
Andria - this is a tough one... Generally, the "institutions" that are our government entities and private corporations want to pay as little for elder care as possible. So, if family members are willing to keep parents home, they'll let you do it and will pay nothing. With out knowing more about your parents - age, income, etc. it's difficult to give specific advice.

I suggest that you contact the Area agency on Aging within your county to see whats possible within your state. If they are old enough there could be some help available through the Veterans Affairs. See your local VA services for that. Also, if your parents have a long term care insurance program, they could pay for some in home care - which is cheaper than paying for assisted living or skilled nursing home.

If you take your parents into YOUR home and if you provide more than 50% of their annual support you can claim them as dependents on your taxes. So - you could claim another exemption or two and pay less taxes each month. Before doing something like that though, add up all their expenses, part of the mortgage/rent, food, prescriptions, clothing allowance, part of the water, sewer, garbage and electric plus food and transportation. When in doubt, talk with a tax professional. this may not be a regular income but will certainly help if they live with you.

Caring for our aging parents is the most honorable yet least appreciated job we can have - other than parents of teenagers!! LOL
Best of luck.

If you parent recieves VA benefits, then you can apply for the aid and attendence benefit. Just contact the Veterans Administration to apply. The maximum benefit amount is around $283.00 per month for the spouse of a veteran.
