My mother falls and injures herself often despite training caregivers who are there 24hours a day.

I'm concerned that my loyal caregives may get injured as my mother's disease gets worse and she continues to fall and get injured. I told all the caregivers if they feel the risk of injury is too high then they need to think about whether taking care of my mother is worth it. All of them want to keep taking care of her. I've read that if a caregiver is injured, the client s resonsible to pay all medical bills and loss of pay. What can we do? I'm not sure the homeowners policy covers them ...enough. I'm really worried that caregiver injury could wipe-out mothers small remaining savings, causing us to send her to institutional care.

Stephenremy -you are probably right or I mean you are right but I did try friends who were employed by the nursing home that my husband was in who worked for us on their time off and one was great and the other one was bad news and would just not show up and I was so worried because she had to travel a distance but we lived close to where she worked and if they are working off the books you can not claim the cost on your income taxes but your home insurance would probably cover or you might be able to get low cost insurance but the state I live in has nothing low cost- I would ask Carol what she thinks it just did not work for us but he really needs to be in a nursing home full time and it is only a matter of time until that happens as for you if it is working and you have a good group of aides I would do as you are doing but also the aides we hired were very close in pay to what one agency cost but we got the owners son who was very lazy so having an agency is not the only answer- at the hospital where I worked one of the employees had her own little agency and she was very responsible adn only had aides who were great-but as I said I think what you are doing is what is right for you at this time, take it has been nice talking to you=I wrote an update on my wall

Thank you for the suggestion. It would have been attractive to consider agency caregivers in the beginning. It is probably not a good idea right now because going with an agency now would result in asking my entire group to leave us. And even though agencies train and insure their people, I also know you pay for all of it with higher fees. I estimated it would cost me about $120 extra per day for agency caregivers who are insured and trained vs our private caregivers who are trained and not insured. As this point it seems more reasonable that we can probably buy caregiver insurance for lot less than $120 extra per day, over $800 extra per week or over $3200 extra per month. Thanks again for the suggestion and if you have any other ideas, we would apprecate it.

That is why I use an agency because they have insurance and seem more relieable than using someone who is not with an agency even it is more expensive plus you can use the receipts when income tax is due.
