Turning off the utilities while mom is in the nursing home reinforces the idea that she is never coming home again.

A really hard day; mom in nursing home with medicaid started. My siblings won't chip in for utilities or yard maintenance, so I have no choice but to discontinue utilities on my mom's house. (and the house I grew up in.) My mom loved her home so much, and it's been a really hard day to have to stop these services. It reinforced the inevitable, which is, she is never going home again. It hurts really bad..

Realizing that Mom is never going home again is a very sad day indeed. Give yourself some time to grieve that loss, and then deal with the practicalities of what to do with the house.
