My Mom is an alcoholic with dementia.

She stopped drinking. Now has a new friend that drinks so now she drinks again.

I do not know what you can do about this. My suggestion, detach, and be glad she is in assisted living and not living with you. Sorry if this sounds cold, but it is something YOU cannot control.
