My husband is so upset about the president elect. Anyone else have this problem?

Any chance the TV could "go on the fritz" for a few days? Throw a breaker maybe?

I went off the grid Tuesday night. This is the only online site, I've gone to. I need time to regroup. I suppose it's like the phases Denial, Isolation (I'm still here.),Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. I'm trying to figure out what life lesson I can take away from this. We have to lean on each other for support and PRAY.

I am looking for my safety pin to pin to my clothes (like a brooch) when I go out. It is a symbol that we stand with all the people who are feeling disenfranchised.

Jinx, to give your husband peace of mind, the President cannot run amuck with power as President. Any projects the President wants to have done has to go through Congress, and that could take a long time....

- First a member of the House or the Senate needs to write up legislation for whatever idea they have. Next the legislation need to be introduced to the House or the Senate. Then the legislation is assigned a Bill #, and the Bill is sent to the Government printing office and copies are made.

- Next the Bill is referred to the appropriate Committee. A Bill could be sent to numerous Committees. A time limit is set. If the Bill is ignored, it dies. If the Bill survives the Committee, there are a lot of steps. Hearings are held. Subcommittees report their findings to the Committee. Still more steps.

- Now we have floor action in either the House or Senate, where ever the Bill was first introduced. Here comes the debates. Some we can watch on C-SPAN. Once the debates are done, then comes the Voting in lets say the House. If it is voted yes in the House by a certain number of members of the House, then the next step the Bill heads to the Senate where there is committees, hearings, debates, and voting.

- Now many months later, if at all, the President gets to see the Bill, and he either signs it into law or Veto. Now the Congress can over ride a Veto.

Whew, all part of checks and balances within our Government.

We do try to distract him or change the channel to classic rock, etc. He's too functional to consent to being shielded from the news. Letting him have his way almost all the time is how I survive.

Jinx,your husband's certainly not alone, nor is his distress invalid or an overreaction. He joins the thousands of people who have taken to the streets to protest. I don't recall this many widespread protests since the Vietnam War.

Some people I know were also upset on Wednesay; some were in shock, and as your husband, some (including me) considered leaving the country. I still am, but my father is here and it would be too disorienting to move him to another country. However, that doesn't mean that I'm not going to research the idea.

I've consoled myself with a few possibilities:

1. Some political followers are speculating that all the racist and sexist ranting was to appeal to specific groups/classes of people, tapping into the bigotry, etc. and leveraging it to gain votes.

Some have also queried and wondered whether, if this was merely a political ploy, what those groups will do if he changes his tactics after he's sworn in. What they would do is turn against him, and likely guarantee that a second term is unlikely.

2. If he does proceed with his attempts to disenfranchise or harass specific groups, he might be flirting with civil rights violations. And he might also be courting an impeachment movement.

Remember when Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment?

3. There are other possibilities, that he might actually carry out his hatred and bigotry through legislative attempts. Or he might alienate friendly countries and allies to the point that he pushes the US to stand alone on international issues and cooperation.

Those to me are the worse case scenarios. If he does, go down those rocky paths, I suspect that civil rights groups may join together and sue to enjoin him from violating existing laws, and probably more causes of action that I haven't even thought about.

Still, I won't deny that I felt sick all day Wednesday and still do every time I think about how deep this nation could sink if he does carry out his threats.

We all must realize that half the nation was not happy with the results of Tuesday's election and half the nation was. That had happened in pretty much all of the elections. Not only for President, but for Senators, members of the House, Governors, Mayors, Council members, etc. throughout time.

Why this election was so different had to do with much more social media. And a lot of face time on TV. I know I was constantly flipping from MSNBC to Fox News to CNN to One America.

My hobby for decades was politics... but this last election has me thinking it is time to find a new hobby.... this last one was way to exhausting and very stressful :P

Get rid of cable, just get the local channels over the air. Less mind pollution.

My Mom also is very upset by the election. I keep turning the channel to anything else. But, even with the TV off...suddenly she will start a rant.

I am hoping she will forget this and meanwhile, I try to keep the TV on channels that do not have news.

Jinx - you suggest you don't want to get into politics in the originl post but then later ask others to admit to being upset! So which is it? I didn't think either of the top candidates would represent me well so I went 3rd party. Therefore I feel I can comment neutrally.
Want to know what I am upset about??? How could both top parties give the country such flawed candidates? How do 'newscasters' spout their personal preferences on the air and get away with it? That is NOT journalism, it is opinion! News reports of protests in the streets? I laughed. You protest something you think isn't right --- elections were held, people voted. If you don't like the results become more active --- let your representatives know where you stand on issues. Vote! etc. The demonstrations in the street were initiated by a socialist organization to protest the DNCs selection of a flawed candidate (presumably they wanted Bernie) and the way the campaign was run. But that is not what was widely reported, was it? University professors cancelling classes and telling their students that they were no longer safe!!! I liken this to inciting a riot! This is a learning opportunity --- Guess what? We don't always get what we want. But the public has spoken and power will transfer. Read Frequentflyer's response over and over. We have a president not a dictator. Life will continue. As to your husband. Pull the plug for a few days. I think the entire country should do that. Or you can order a therapy dog like they brought into the capitol. (REALLY isn't that absurd). OK, my rant is over. : - ))

If you've ever wondered why foreigners (e.g. me) have the nerve to comment so freely on US elections, it's because it matters almost as much to the rest of the world (or the bits of it anyone would choose to live in, anyway).

I'm sorry for those who are heartbroken, and I don't believe anyone can not be astonished that - all personality issues aside - a self-funded outsider could beat those odds; but we're going to have to get used to it.

Besides, you think you feel bad? Then enjoy watching an entire line-up of world leaders eat their words. Cackle!

I wouldn't worry about privatizing SS. That would mean whoever controlled it would not be allowed to withdraw it for any other purpose (just like 401k administrators - there is a federal law to protect 401k's from administrators) Social Security never had that protection. We should be getting twice the amount we get, but because the government for the past 40 years has been legally allowed to use that money instead of letting it compound. Remember Al Gore? That was what he was saying - that SS should be in a "lock box" meaning, the govt shouldn't be allowed to touch it. Maybe its just me, but I don't trust the government that much and I'm happy I have a 401k that is in my name alone so they can't borrow from it.

Churchmouse, I know what you mean. I have never seen such backtracking as they're doing with Brexit. It makes for good comedy. I especially like the one with Simon's Cat. But I know it is serious for the people trying to figure out what to do.

I think it was Michael Portillo? - anyway, a very senior retired politician - reminiscing about his days as a junior government minister at the Treasury; and he said as you went through the department, being promoted through the ministerial ranks, you kept half-expecting eventually to reach the special room, the inner sanctum, where dwelt and worked the geniuses who really did know what was going on with the economy. After some years he came to understand: there isn't one.

What he's best remembered for is making himself so unpopular that he hilariously lost a very safe seat, in a pretty (small c) conservative London borough, to a camp gay socialist teacher. That event has since been overtaken by the 2015 general election when the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, the second most senior member of the opposition party, got rudely turfed out by his constituents and is now participating in a reality tv ballroom dancing competition (I am not making this up); but at the time we all laughed a lot.

Hmmm. Reality TV. Maybe Ed Balls knew something we didn't know about alternative routes to power.

Jinx, I was also upset by the election results. cried for two days. Trump encouraged hate, bigotry & intolerance during his campaign. That is not the America I thought I lived in.

But I have stopped crying & became a monthly donor to Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood & The American Civil Liberties Union. I have also donned my safety.

I am not moving to another country. I am going to do everything in my power to make this country better.

cheribob, I think Clinton said it best "When they go low, we go high." I think about all the bad stuff that was thrown at Obama and how much hate there was. And I think of how hateful this campaign has been. Now that there is a winner, we'll just have to go with it. I hope it will go well. I don't want to act like the Obama haters acted. That was so disrespectful. I'm going to embrace Hillary's advice of going high. This doesn't mean that I'm not going to feel anything, but I'm not going to go low enough to start espousing the type hate we've seen in the last eight years.

Actually Hilary borrowed that quote from Michelle Obama. Personally- I would have liked to have seen protest of this magnitude PRIOR to the election when it might have had a real impact on the vote. I also question how many protesters actually voted. I have to think not as many as it appears or things would have turned out differently. Don't get me wrong - I hate the outcome as much as anybody but I do think the democrats may have got a bit complacent- buying into media reported polls, which we all now know were just plain wrong.

I'm not surprised that the Donald won. As for him having free rein to do whatever he pleases, listen to Frequent Flyer. She knows what she is talking about. In fact I think the Donald may very well regret running for President when he realizes he has to answer to people.

As for Hilary. I was actually disappointed in her a little. She couldn't come out and make her concession speech on the night of the election like every other loser throughout history. If that is how she handles defeat maybe she wasn't such a great choice either.
