Sad news. I'm almost certainly not getting a new kitty, at least not getting Halo from my friend who wanted me to take her.

I was sick so much during November and December, so I kept putting off picking H up, and my friend was saying they were happy to keep her another week or so since her kids like the cat. Then I was literally on the way to driving out to my friend's place an hour away in mid-December with a little soft-sided cat carrier when I realized that no one would be at my place for a week during Christmas, and I didn't think I should leave a new kitty in a new place alone. So friend and I agreed she should keep her through Christmas.

I texted her the day I was driving back to my city to arrange to get her, and *crickets.* The next day, she texted me that, while she feels terrible about doing this to me, she feels bad about giving the kitty away because her daughter is attached, and also friend feels the kitty helps her daughter with emotional regulation... it's her support kitty, basically.

Welp.

I had set up everything at my place - food, litter box, toys... And now it's just sad looking to me.

But it's ok. Obviously, I didn't bond with this cat, though I was so excited to get her. I'm not (too) upset with my friend, and I understand! I told her to make the decision that was right for her family, and I'm ok with it.

She has to get "permission" from her husband to keep the kitty, though, since that was never the plan, and hubs thinks they have enough animals already. We'll see what happens.

I may or may not seek to adopt from one of the local shelters if I don't get Halo. I wasn't thinking of getting a cat right away since I'm busy with work and school, but then I was very excited to get Halo. I'm a little lost on how I feel now.

Bummer. 😕

New kitten Asher is precious! He's a cuddler but not for too long because he's full of boundless energy, buzzing about the house, checking out everything, getting into everything and testing out his 8 wk old jumping skills.

He really loves this catnip mouse we bought him. He rolled around on the floor, bunny-kicking it with his feet. Then throwing it into the air and doing 4-legged launches to jump up and catch it. Then later when he was asleep, he woke up, jumped out of his little bed and ran straight to the mouse to start all over again. He's pretty funny.

We're going to pick out a Christmas tree tonight. I can't imagine how a decorated tree will hold up with him around. This might be a year to leave the more expensive decorations off the tree.

Apple,

Awwww…he sounds precious! Asher is cute too.

One of my friends took in a stray cat that wandered into their yard. They already had a cat and they named their new kitty, Extra!

Halo is a good name! I share your excitement because we're picking up a new kitten tomorrow!!! He's so cute, mostly gray with some white tabby stripes on his face. We decided on the name Asher. He's 8 weeks old and was just spayed yesterday.

Ali,

I bet that you are falling in love with your kitty! They are so cute.

My daughter just got pet insurance for her dog because her last vet visit was a fortune! She used her credit card and is going to have to pay it off in time.

She says that she will be saving a lot of money since she has insurance now.

Halo is a great name!

The new kitty received all her first shots and was spayed and chipped, thanks to my friend, who still has her. It would have been tough for me to find time to search out a new vet (I'm done with my old one) and get all these issues addressed. I sent her a Zelle to reimburse the very reasonable costs of all this care done by a non-profit vet organization. I'm grateful!

And of course, I checked with my two roomies before I brought a cat into the place, and one had asked that she have all her first shots and any needed flea treatment prior to coming here. All that and more was done. Check, check.

New Kitty Day is getting closer, and I'm excited!

My friend's daughter named her Angel. I thought Halo would be cute, and I can explain to the daughter (10yo?) that it's what angels wear on their heads. She's a white/gray kitty, so it's an apropos name..? Idk. I like it. :)

The same friend that gave me Lilah and Divo (both died in the past couple of years) has a stray kitten she wants to rehome.

I knew about the kitten because I saw my friend's Facebook post/picture a month ago. The kitten is short-haired, white-with-gray markings, and around four months old. I didn't volunteer to adopt her when I saw the post, even though I thought about it.

But then my friend texted me this week and asked if I wanted to take her. I asked about the kitten's personality and needs and then decided, yup, I'll take her!

So maybe as soon as next week, I'll have a kitten in the house. 😻

Our puppy funny,, Chloe loves green beans,, gets some almost every day with her food, and it helps keep her weight down also. So hubs is making green bean casserole, and he is using one of those giant cans of beans. He takes the top off, tells me to get my camera ready, and sits the giant can on the floor in front of puppers. You should have seen her face, she could barely see into the can. It was like "I have just won the lottery but I have no idea how to proceed here" Obviously she was given some,, it was too cute! Plenty from that can have been put aside for her.

Bounce,
HE EARNED that name. :(
I’m just done taking him to the vet. (not really. Just annoyed)
missy too
I figure they were rescued and one is 16 and the other is 14 years old..
missy 16, has a bad skin rash and other issues. Doc called me up and said she has a new heart murmur.. echocardiogram highly suggested.. what?????
I kindly told him she is now my hospice kitty… I’ll keep her happy.. this thing actually purrs while she is eating. It’s fun to hear…
Sur Barfsalot.. poor guy.. poor us when we step in it the following morning..
I try to give them boiled chicken…
we got him 3 days old.. eyes were still closed.. he went with me everywhere.
I took my daughter to school one day. And he would sleep on the dash of my car.. I slid him over to the passenger side of dashboard, and the car next to me was shocked. She thought he was a stuffed animal at first. One day we came home . He wasn’t around.. we sat quietly and yelled for him. He was on top of a telephone pole.. way up high.. DH got the ladder… told me to go get him.. cat trusts you more.. (wonderful)my neighbors house had a 20 foot drop to the yard behind them. I told my DD to give me her jacket. It doesn’t fit you mom.. today it will!!
I climbed up, look down at the backyard . And looked up at sir barfs… as he was deciding to climb higher…no no way.. grabbed him by the scruff and Velcro’d him to the jacket.
he never did that agsin..

we adopted a 3 day old kitten. He grew up with the 2 dogs. One was a Dalmatian. He looked like her. The Dal would growl at cat, nicknamed Sir Barfsalot.
When I brought mom’s cat to live with us, I put both cats in crates and had them face each other. It’s an easy way for them to get used to each other. Then I’d let one out of cage for awhile. then switch. Then I’d let one roam in a room while the other had the the rest of the home to wonder.. then switch.
At the beginning when moms cat came to live with us.. snd they were in cages staring at each other, missy started hissing. SIR Barfsalot never heard a hiss before. He grew up with dogs.. it was the funniest thing. It was an attempt with a question mark sort of a hiss.. “huh..hiiis?” What the heck is that noise?
the only aggressive noise he ever heard before missy was a growl.
If it’s your idea to pick him up, he will give you the warning growl, then comes the bite.. not hard, but it’s still a bite…
Cats are fun.. and unpredictable .

Bounce - the kitten climbed the screen and somehow made the jump to the christmas lights that are at the top of the ceiling around the perimeter of the room and was hanging from them. All in the span of the seconds my DH wasn't watching said kitten. He was alerted by momma cat yelling at him. It was like she was saying turn around my baby is in trouble. I think the hanging from the christmas lights was actually in the movie Gremlins.😺🌲🐈🦃

Bounce yes I have 2 other "rescue" cats that came from outside inside. Baby will be inside forever and hopefully mom too. I won't know for sure until her cone is off and she can be a little more free from being crated so she doesn't pull her staples but I got her ear tipped just in case.

Had to go to the vet yesterday because momma got an infection from the spay. We only had her cone off a couple of times and she licked the spot so I guess that was enough to cause problems. Now the cone will be on until Monday when she goes to get her staples out. Hopefully the infection is cleared up fully by then and I can retire her cone for good. It's been a long 2 weeks.

Not looking forward to a repeat on the spaying in a few months for baby.

I think the kitten will be the bridge for introductions between momma and my other two cats. I will now have 2 boys and 2 girls.

I bought the kitten a scratching pad and she looked at it like it was an alien. She swiped at it and did the adorable kitten crab walk as she backed away from it. I know in a few weeks she will love it but that kitten crab walk is cute as hell.

My one boy was born outside and spent a winter under our shed sleeping. We spotted him sometimes coming home before dark to go under it. My husband gained his trust and he would run up to him for food helling his little head off. When we brought him in he was so scared of anything soft like a blanket or a bed. Now he curls up in bed and loves to snuggle under blankets.

Bounce this is my first kitten. So it's been fun 😺. The kitten was a package deal when her momma brought her to our deck a few weeks ago. We have 2 other adult cats so we are 1 cat away from being official crazy cat people. My other cat plays with her through the door. Which is great because at first he would hiss at her.

I thought kittens slept for like 19 hours a day. Nothing tuckers out this kitten. She played for 2 hours and was ready for more. Plus the other six 30 minute play sessions she got all day today. She climbs the screen door and onto the top of the main door to try and get out of the quarantine room she is in for now with her momma. Almost jumped onto the christmas lights at the top.of the ceiling before we caught the little gremlin. When we put her to bed in her crate she throws a temper tantrum like a little kid. It's so cute.

She keeps trying to nurse her momma who is 7 days out from being spayed and momma wasn't having any of that.

I often save containers in case I want them later, but I have to say after cleaning out my grandparents' house during caregiving, there really needs to be a limit. lol My grandparents' neighbors called their house "the store" when I started offering them things and inviting them in to take whatever they could use. There were just so, so many containers and other things kept over many decades.

Recently my workplace was getting rid of glass mason jars with handles on them. They were drinking mugs that were replaced. I took a case of them home and tried to give them to neighbors and roommates, but no takers. I kept four and donated the rest. Now I wish I'd kept at least six. lol It's hard to strike just the right balance on the spectrum from hoarding to only keeping things that are useful. I find having less space to store stuff helps prioritize.

I love to upcycle glass jars, they are so much better than plastic, and some of them are really pretty. I love the ones you get at Costco with fruit in them, sort of rounded? I keep candy, flour, sugar and the like at the river house in them. And the dog food!

Willie, on Facebook they have one of those containers being used as a mail box because the top is hinged. We bought our litter that way and found all kinds of uses for them.

cw and Way,

I am all about multi purpose items. It saves money to up cycle new life into old items that would be otherwise discarded.

It’s certainly not a new concept. Our grandparents up cycled many things. Necessity is the mother of invention!

Good for you for up cycling the kitty litter containers.

I have used the kitty litter boxes as buckets as well . And now I buy the litter in cardboard boxes and refill the plastic bucket . Less plastic in the landfill .

My cat loves playing with hair ties , sort of like rubber bands I guess.

I'm not sure if this is more appropriate for the cat thread or the gardening one, but since this one popped up I'm posting it here.
I was commenting to a friend that I was thinking of buying some 5 gallon buckets to store my dahlias, cannas and other tender bulbs over the winter and she mentioned the pails from her kitty litter are about that size and with 4 cats she has more than she can ever use herself. Wow!!! - they have lids, they are rectangular so they use space more efficiently than round ones, and they stack too.... I'm flabbergasted thinking that thousands of these wonderful pails must be going to the landfill every week!
