Dad just turned 86. He seems alert and quite "normal" until he starts to fall asleep. Then he'll wake and just talk nonsense. He swears there are people in the room, and he will often seem to be folding laundry or something to that effect when he is sleeping. He has also sworn that someone is stealing his wallet in the middle of the night. I really don't know what to do. I'm not sure what the options are, he has no health insurance (my parents are legal immigrants and have been living here for about 15 years). I really need some advice.

They self pay. But I'm going to look into Medicaid. They are permanent residents and have lived here for over 10 years. It's just knowing who to call and where to start. It seems like a complicated process. I have a dr appointment for a full check up next week - just a GP though.

painter01, that does not sound like normal aging. And since it happens only at night, it doesn't sound to me like typical dementia, either. I think that advice has to come from a health care provider. The fact that some of this happens while he is asleep makes me wonder if he sound be seen by a sleep disorder clinic.

He has no health insurance. How has he been paying for his healthcare? Can he afford to get medical help now? If not, call your state's agency on aging and find out what kind of financial aid options might be available.

Have him examined by a neurologist - preferably one that treats dementia and find out if he has it first.
