For the entry doors, we replaced the deadbolts with an August Smart Lock on one side and a Kwikset lock with Smartkey technology on the other. The August lock is installed on the outside of the door rather than the inside. The deadbolt with a lock is facing in. The Smartkey technology enables us to rekey the lock so that it matches out existing keys. We can open the lock with a key if we want. If not, we can use our Smartphones (either the August lock or the Alexa app) or we can give the Echo dot a verbal command to open the door from the inside. We are often carrying a smart device, so it makes it handy. The best part is that we have it set up to lock automatically when we close the door, so if she is intent to escape, then it is subtle. And, it does not draw her to obsess about getting at the lock. It relocks after a preset time if you choose. Best of all, for safety, the unlock can be unlocked remotely over the Internet.

We also replaced the doorknobs with CopperCreek privacy locks. Instead of requiring a key or a pick, it has a slot. The slot can be opened with a coin or a slotted screwdriver. So, we keep a coin and next to the door. And there is no key to lose or have to go back for. And if the coin get picked up, then it is easy to replace.

In her room, there are only passenger doors, ie, knobs that don’t lock at all, to prevent her from locking herself in. These knobs are about $10 of Amazon, and they are well worth it.
