My father went in hospital and contracted c-diff , pneumonia, found on the floor 4 times, the list goes on. Anyway at 91 and deteriorating we asked if we could have him home despite having an active c-diff infection. They discharged him but we had no idea what that would entail. As many of you will know it is a terrible debilitating condition. They sent him home on palliative pathway with no support. Some 4 months on we have cleared the c-diff with the use of Kefir 3 times a day. Hospital prescribed Actimel which was useless. I would highly recommend you try it, you've nothing you lose and everything to gain. No recurrence for 10 weeks now. It takes a few weeks to see an effect but stick with it. Good luck to all.

My Mom, who is 95 and has Alzheimers, first contracted c-diff after a bad case of coilitis. Three heavy antibiotics were used. She has had three reoccurrences. She had lost 30 pounds in a matter of a few months. Doctors don’t want to do a transplant. Heartbreaking.

I tried to get to the LongTermCare.gov website but it is apparently down. However, when I see the comment about 70% needing long-term care, I wonder if distinctions are made between, for example, someone having this care for 10 years due to dementia and/or chronic major health issues versus those needing it for a limited time either to recover from an illness or surgery, or simply during the last few weeks or months of life. I suspect that some long term care insurers don't make this distinction to frighten people into thinking they'll all necessarily require it for years and years.

I've seen fecal material on the wall of a nursing home room, so nothing would surprise me as to the conditions within some of them. There's a lot of "hit or miss" because of staff turnovers, understaffing, and sometimes just apathy among some members of the staff. Probably the shorter the time spent in any of these facilities, the less likely it will be that such an infection is contracted.

My dad died alone, in quarantine, on July 28, 2012, after contracting C diff in a nursing home. At the time he was recovering from a back infection. I think he would have survived if not for this illness. Nursing homes are death traps.
