I have two questions for the awesome group here: 1. What is the best mattress cover for incontinence - I need a second one.... and. 2. How do I / you deal with the smell of urine 24/7 in the bathroom....he doesn't even hold his willy anymore to get the stream in the toilet so it is a flood on the tile floor every time. I mop 2-3 times a day and the smell is seriously overwhelming. High ceilings and NO windows. :-( My husband has LBD and heart issues...the last few days he just pees and poops in bed instead of getting up. ..(hence question number 1!) Thanks in advance.

Wow-just as I was reading this I was facing this very issue. He is either constipated or incontinent. It requires so much intimate care and cleansing, using aloe wipes, then ointment, then thoroughly cleaning the toilet seat and the bars, then making sure his hands are clean as well as his nails, and of course, my own hands and nails, often a change of clothing too. He tries to clean himself. I try to give him as much privacy as possible, but now I cannot have regular respite care, as no one except a n aide is trained to do something so personal. If I did not feel trapped before, I certainly do now. The only ok thing here is that he allows me to clean him without getting agitated.

My mom with dementia tends to only empty her bowels or urinate in her adult briefs in her chair. I have lined the chair with washable pads but the wetness and odor is difficult to deal with. Any suggestions on why she will not use the restroom? She sleeps in her chair also, refusing her bed.

My 97 yr old father is a double amputee from WWII. Hard for him to keep his fingernails on his 1 hand clean. I mix a half cup of peroxide with a half cup of warm water & have him soak his fingertips in it for at least 5 minutes then rinse with fresh warm water. Works great!

Tried the 36 inch wide disposable bed pads but they moved around too much & he took them off & threw on the floor. Found these on Amazon that are wider so can "tuck in" if using a twin bed, they have an extra 18 inches on both sides beyond the 30x36 padded area.
"Extra Large Disposable Incontinence Bed Pad with Tuckable Sides 10 Count (Size 30Wx36L) - Underpad Incontinence tuck in Protection for Adult, or Child - Absorbent Waterproof Chux by BrightCare" amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y5ZW1XX/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I found it helps to use a binder clip (like you use to clip a thick stack of papers together) to clamp it onto the rolled trim of the mattress in addition o tucking it in.
Has been a HUGE help with avoiding daily laundry!

My 92 yr old mom-in-law, is incontinent. She has Alzheimer's and is blind. ( We do have her go to the bathroom before bedtime.) Our problem is that she goes in her diaper at night & then puts her hand in it. By the time we get her up, the feces has dried under her nails. We soak her hand, but the feces hardens up like cement. I have used a nail brush, a soft toothbrush and also cuticle sticks. She says everything hurts. I try to be gentle, but she is not very cooperative. I worry about infection. Any suggestions? Thanks

I have had some issues with incontinence, and it's mighty embarrassing. I could not drink Mountain Dew, and a bunch of other things had to be eliminated from my diet. It turns out my problem was super treatable - a vitamin deficiency caused the problem. I don't get diarrhea when I drink Mountain Dew anymore, and I often do not get diarrhea when I eat ice cream. It is good to be liberated from all the diarrhea. I had a Vitamin D deficiency so I take a 2000 unit Vitamin D3 supplement with my breakfast each day, and it's good to have my life back.

I have found daily use of MiraLax essential to ensure regular and effective bowel movements for myself and my wife who has been bedridden for more than 6 years. Perhaps there are problems with long time (more than 2 years) use of MiraLax. If so, I would like to learn about potential problems and be prepared to address them. So far, our daily use of MiraLax continues to be effective and free of side effects..
