I believe there is another factor involved in end-of-life considerations and the decision between palliative and hospice care. Hospice is generally covered under Medicare A whereas Palliative care is rendered and reimbursed under Medicare B. The issue arises when a patient is in a nursing home which is being reimbursed under Medicare A. Medicare A only reimburses one provider so if the nursing home patient goes under hospice the reimbursement is generally for the hospice care and the patient is responsible for the nursing home accommodation and services. Should the patient elect to use palliative services then the reimbursement for the nursing home would still be Medicare A and the reimbursement for palliative Medicare B thereby saving the patient the cost of accommodation which can be very expensive.

Please update my profile. I took care of my two parents until they passed. I also took care of my husband who had Pancreatic cancer. And, while working full time, I cared for a dear friend for 28 years. Looking back - how on earth did I do it? I am now 83 but still extremely active with two jobs and taking college courses, going swimming, and out to eat and to do whatever else I can handle. Thank god those days are gone. However, I learned so many things from my experiences I could write a book and have actually started doing that. I can help with many issues if someone wants to contact me.
