I sometimes think people misread me 80+ have autism+dd where the dd comes in and being a little slow may lead people to think early dementia but the dr has never say a word.The only other sign is being incontinent but been this way for 30yrs.

As far a where to go for testing, we are lucky that our local hospital has a memory and mobility group that does the testing, evaluation and treatment or referral for treatment. I have seen them for my balance issues and mom sees their SW on a regular basis. Check with a major medical center to see if they have a group like this. Otherwise, start with your PCP and get a referral to a neurologist or similar. Best wishes ...

We are fortunate that a local hospital has a memory and mobility center that brings folks together to do the cognitive testing and can refer folks for the needed tests and other follow-up. I have seen them about my balance issues and mom see's one of their councilors on a regular basis.

I was wondering the same thing, how you get tested for dementia. My husband just got an MRI...not sure what that's suppose to show..but we will find out when he goes in for his appt to discuss it. He is on Medicare but also has a secondary insurance that pays for this.
David Hilfiker, thank you for an interesting article. I find myself wondering if I am having memory issues due to dementia, or maybe it is just stress from dealing with very stubborn elderly parents, or from normal age decline.
I think I would want to know if it was dementia, that way I could start to plan ahead. Like downsizing and moving to a retirement community that has tiers of care which include a memory center. And learn if there is anything I can do to slow the progress.
