Shingrix is a highly effective shingles vaccine-on the market since January 2018, recommended for people over the age of 50. It involves two shots, spaced 2-6 months apart. I received the shots at my local neighborhood pharmacy and my BCBS paid for the immunization, I pd $25 each time for administration.
Being immunized brings me major relief from worry because a family member had permanent damage from shingles. My odds are now excellent, way better than with the older vaccine, of not getting shingles.

If my stats are correct or up to date, research showed the following results: 51% effective ages 60 +; 64% effective 60-69; 41% effective 70-79; 18% effective 80+. I'm not sure if the vaccine lessens the pain if shingles occurs. Hopefully it does lessen the pain.

Yes, I was willing to spend the money to get the vaccine. AS I stated I had a small case of Shingles and it was enough to tell me that I will never want that one again. I was very lucky that it only lasted a month. My pain around my mid section was so painful that my husband took me to the ER. I thought it must be something internal killing me. You do NOT want to get this Shingles.

I've been considering getting this vaccine, even though I am below the recommended age.I'll have to pay out of pocket.

I have several autoimmune issues, that cause me concern. I'm not sure which way to go. I have never had a reaction to any vaccine, including flu and pneumonia. I have Type I Diabetes, pollen and mold allergies, eczema, psoriasis and hypothyroidism. I'm allergic to penicillin.

The reason Seniors are not getting the vaccine is the cost. I put over $300.00 out to get it. It is SO expensive and why Medicare does not cover it is a wonder to me.

Nice article. Although anyone over 55 should get the vaccine, I was surprised to read the low incidence rate of shingles in those vaccinated. My 86-yo husband got a shingles vaccine 7 years ago but came down with a significant case of shingles trailing from his middle back around to his sternum. It was not as painful as it might have been had he not had the vaccine - but it has certainly wiped him of his energy - even a year later.
