Thanks for sharing this information! I learned it the hard way, when my mother, who has mild memory loss, was at a Sears with her friend, and without me. The store clerk talked her into opening a charge account, one that I had closed to keep her spending under control. I was furious, and only after research did I find out I could freeze credit to prevent it from happening again.

I did a credit freeze when I first heard that a well known big box store was having issues with hackers. Doing the *freeze* was so simple via internet, and my cost in my State was $10.00 for each credit bureau. It does give me peace of mind :)

Plus I never check my banking accounts on-line, never had set up password, etc. Just another level of protection for me.

Valuable information. A few comments: I disagree with what was said about there being no need to lift with all three bureaus; I have found that in practice when I go to lift a security freeze, the company associated with the reason I'm needing to lift the security freeze cannot and/or will not tell me which credit bureau they are going to be obtaining my credit report from...so I've had to contact all three of them. Also in some states, it's required by law for security freezes to be FREE, period, not just to those over 65 or who have been victims of identity theft. It's been free in our state for years.

Agreed -- very important not to lose the pin number for each credit bureau.

Although there have been a few instances where I've had to take extra time to lift a security freeze temporarily, the peace of mind has been worth it, though this is just a first step in protection. I've also been more aggressive lately in creating better passwords, checking bank statements more regularly for fraudulent transactions, creating more thorough email alerts on bank accounts, and so on.
