Irinan, about 10% of the US population is over the age of 80. About 5% of the population of France is over the age of 80. Perhaps that could have something to do with dementia rates. The US population is made up of more different ethnic groups than the French population. This, too, could have an impact on disease rates. This is not to say that different agricultural practices and pharmaceutical practices couldn't be factors, too, but your observations about France hardly constitute evidence. And, by the way, many of us 70+ Americans are not quite gaga. :)

As Always your articles are interesting reading and very informative. The diet to protect you from Alzheimers is a diet we oldsters ( I am 78) grew up with. for me, the biggest shook is to see how far American food has deteriorated in the past 25 years. I can see this clearly as I live half the year in France where people in the 90's are living alone and driving is quite commonplace! Here , people are gaga by 70 or less. I do not recall that to be so when my parents were alive.( Our parents died in their late 90's) so it is very clear to me that Big AG and Big Pharma have been big factors in destroying Americans health. It is your constant vigilance that is SO helpful. If it was 't for your guidance, I would leave the US permanently !

not a bad point about the television , pam . my ex and one of my sons used to ( and still do ) just get lost in ridiculous movies . they would clearly leave the room -- glazed eyes -- not in the present . the effect on them was so obvious that older son and i would just give them a wrinkled scowl and head outside for something real and productive . i havent watched a half dozen movies in my 56 years of life and consider it mental masturbation .

Alzheimer's is caused by television. Grandma said it would rot the brain. Of course the bathtub gin from prohibition never hurt anyone.

the newspapers this week have been screaming about benzos having a strong link to alz . i could almost believe this but ill bet it isnt from zanax and sleep aids as much as the drugs they give you for scope procedures . these drugs dont knock you out they only erase your memory . after any scope procedure i usually have about a month of clinical depression . this is a dangerous part of the brain to tamper with . its a hypnotic effect . i can take 2 ambien at night and in a few minutes im staring at two words on the pc and comprehending nothing . completely unlike me as im usually the speed reader from hell ..

Take those list with a grain of salt. I am sure there are seniors out there who had followed something similar most of their life, without knowing about any list, who still developed memory issues... and some that didn't.

Not long ago I saw the list to help present breast cancer... I had done everything on that list, before I even knew about that list, and I still got cancer... go figure.

I really believe the biggest cause of some illnesses is *stress*. We are in such a rushing world, trying to get from point A to point B in record time... and now we are wired 24/7.

For me, I am starting to see some memory issues in myself because I am so stressed out over my parents.

All Propaganda, to give those that have not experienced what us caregivers have, and bull crap! Step daughter 55 does all the 7 ways to prevent it, because her Father & two Aunts have or had it, mother had Parkinson's/ dementia, and she won't even come here (25 minutes away) to visit her 83 YO Dad with advanced ALZ, she's a RN too! Guess she's afraid she'll " catch it" - Our life style did many of the 7 preventative measures without even knowing it had anything to do with ALZ, and look where we are. I think the Gov has their hand in this to keep a million person march on Washington to find a way NOW to stop this disease.

It sounds like the typical healthy-life plan with a bit of cinnamon sprinkled on it for metabolism. If it would prevent Alzheimer's, I don't know. It might help with vascular or metabolic dementia.

There is one sure-fire, never-fail way to prevent Alzheimer's: die before you reach the age of susceptibility. If you live long enough, your chances of developing it increase each year.

Sure, eat well, exercise, be social. Enjoy life. No one is promised a healthy tomorrow.

(And only someone who has been doing these seven things for years would consider them "easy." ... Oh, and by the way, change your life-long eating patterns. Heck, it will be easy. ... Umm, worthwhile, maybe. Do-able, perhaps. Easy? Not so much.)
