Excellent article! It's just common sense, but unfortunately a lot of doctors don't seem to understand that elder systems function more slowly, so are slower to process and clear medications. My 94-year old mom is always very sensitive to meds, so we start her at the lowest possible dose and work up. Luckily her doctor listens to me when I tell her that. I wish more doctors would be more cautious in prescribing meds for seniors.

Good article, John, thanks for bringing it to our attention. I've always wondered why a doctor would give the same dosage of the same medicine not matter what size or age of a person... why would a petit older person get the same dosage as a young football player?

I've always had issues with meds.... thus, if I get someone new, I cut the pill in quarters and start out with a quarter dosage [with my doctor's approval].... if I can tolerate that, then I would try a half a dosage for awhile.

After years of dealing with so many odd side effects from meds, it was just within the past couple of years I learned that fillers used in pills could cause issues with some people.... fillers are used to make the pill large enough to handle, then there is the binder that keeps the pill together, and coating on a pill to make it easier to swallow. Each pharmaceutical manufacturer has their own formula. After a lot of trial and error, I found one manufacturer that is more user friendly for me, thus I always try to have the pharmacy get my meds from that one group.

Otherwise, the pill is worse then the illness itself :0
