I watched "Away From Her" last night with my husband. It opened up a lot of angles, questions and conversation between us. We have both always said that we wanted to stay in our home with the other taking care of us and any in-home help we could get to do so. I was so struck by Julie Christie's character being the one to make the decision that her husband couldn't bear to make - to go into a facility for Alzheimer's care. I don't need someone to 'prove' their love to me. Many times in my life I have seen love and 'not love' and I know it by now. What I want from the love of my life is an assurance that he will do his best to try to keep a life of some semblance while he sees that I am cared for, if I lose my mind. Emotions are powerful and are as much important as being practical but both have to be brought into this kind of planning and life change.
