I am 74 I somehow got into a contract with Comcast and now I have to pay a 200.00 service fee to cancel it.It was installed 3 months ago and I have had nothing but trouble since it was installed.I am a cancer surviver but I don't think I can survive Comcast.I have spent 3 mos with intermitten service and on the phone constantly.3 days ago they finally came to my home and discovered the installer used a worn out used cable to install it.Finally it worked. The next day an agent called and since she spoke broken English I said to have an English speaking person call me.2 mins later she disabled my cable box.The next day( sun am) she woke me up at 8:30and asked how my cable was working first she lied and said she didn't call me the day before and then she admitted it.I believe they breached the contract and I should be able to cancal their service with no penalty. Is there any organization that will help me ?I had such pains in my jaws and neck at church I thought I was going to die .I just can't deal with them anymore the last man I talked to was making fun of me and mocking me because I was crying.

My mother has been in NH for 6 mos. she has dementia and no short term memory but she knows her family and wants nothing more than to be with my father, Jack, the love of her life, in their own little home. They need to have someone with them most of the time. My father is 88 and has some health issues but is fairly independent . However he could not handle Mom himself due to mental fatigue and physical concerns with Mom. How could it be impossible to have financial aid through Medicaid supplement the cost of home helpers to fill in the gap when I can't be there? It would be so much cheaper for the govt to pay for sitters at home than keeping our loved ones in nursing homes ! So frustrating not to have the finances to pay for sitters at home.

I'm a senior and caregiver of a 90 year old parent. Living in Nashville is becoming unbearable. There are new houses and apartments being constrcuted all around and in front of me. I was sent a letter with 11 upgrades to my house. I tried using the ladder to paint, cut tree limbs, roofing - etc. ... realized I can't complete this. I've been unsuccessful due to lack of knowlege for contacts. The Residential Repair Service will be the most helpful attempt from your list. Hopefully my Nashville home will fit in with the rest of the neighbor. Thank you for your unselfish sharing of senior citizen aid. R. McM

Lots of good information here! Possible addition would be if a veteran and VA patient, some day care at a local Day Care facility may be paid for by VA + copay. Check with VA Social Services.

Walmart offers a package of their own brand of adult diapers for $8.99.......containes 20 individually wrapped diapers or 18 for the large/extra large size. Plan on about $40.00 per month for this item.

Most manufacturers of adult diapers do offer free samples, but they do not offer a continuous supply of these products.

Robertn, The fact that you are already on this site means: 1) that you have access to a computer, 2) that you have a user name, and that you wish to "get on" the internet without signing up with an internet provider. My suggestion is that you go on another person's internet provider's site as a "guest". Yahoo, AOL and At&T allow such an arrangement at no charge to the user.

I am in Texas. I take care of my mom that has dementia and is now moving into the last stage. The problem is that they put her on a waiting list for everything. DADS gave her 3 months of temporary assistance and no more after that. I am so upset because none of these things are available to her so I am going broke on diapers, wipes, needles, disinfectants and so on. No one and I mean NO ONE will help. There is no help for people that is on a waiting list. I want to keep my mom. I think they do the older people so wrong now. You work hard all your life and pay taxes and come to a waiting list. Sad sad sad.

This article is great. Please add for Illinois residents. Apply at the tax office to freeze your property taxes. This is for age 65 and up. Also in Illinois there is a program for low income seniors called Circuit Breakers. This program helps with prescription drugs. Great information.

Adult Day Care, as described above, is more of a Senior Center concept. Adult Day Care, in fact, does provide some level of care to individuals, ranging from personal care to medications management. While there are some Adult Day Care centers that are social models (focusing mostly on socialization and watchful oversight), many are medical models that do provide medication management and other medically based services.

Senior Centers on the other hand, are for more active, independent seniors and they focus more on health, wellness and socialization. Senior Centers provide many activities and usually at least one nutritionally balanced meal per day.

Both Adult Day Care facilities and Senior Centers can be either publicly funded or private pay, depending on the agency (some are both). For more information, contact the Elder Care Locator at 1-800-677-1116 to be referred to your local Area Agency on Aging for more information about options available in your community.

Thank you for the list.
My mom used to take her friend to a Day Care (in Michigan) that was suppose to be "free", but kept receiving statements of "how much it cost per hour ". She felt pressured to pay out more than she could afford, so she quit taking him.

Regarding medical alert systems, a $30 a month charge is a lot of money for some folks. Also, when I researched getting something like this for our family, I read a number of very negative reviews about one particular, well-known brand name. Sounds like you have to do your homework.

Other families (like ours) prefer a panic-button system that will dial a family member's telephone number instead of a central station. We recently purchased the Personal Assistance Voice Dialer II ($99 and no monthly fee). If my mom or dad pushes his/her panic button, it first dials my home number (if no answer then my cell, then other family members' numbers). We can program in 9-1-1 or other numbers as well. The base unit, which can also be used like a normal phone, allows me to talk directly to my parent. This company appears to have a number of variations on this theme, including one where you can talk thru the panic button (pendant) instead of from the base unit, and a multitude of other electronic helpers for one purpose or another--even one that alerts you when mail has been delivered to your mailbox.

I found this article this morning (2-8-14) and I'm going to share it with others. Another source in our area (southeast Michigan) is senior centers, who maintain medical equipment that can be borrowed for a short while (walkers, wheelchairs, shower benches, etc.). And I have found a vet that makes house calls for my parents' cat and charges a reduced rate to them. Perhaps a state veterinary society can provide a list of vets that offer such services. The cat is so important to my folks.
