Carolinerdancer, what a wonderful group of men. And, you're correct, your local church or churches are a wonderful place to go for help.

One of my clients needed a wheelchair ramp and couldn't afford to have one built. She asked her pastor to pray for her to find a way to get one, and the next Saturday a truck pulled up loaded with wood, four guys got out and in about three hours built and painted a sturdy ramp from her sidewalk to her porch. They were all men from her church, and the wood was donated by a local lumber yard. Churches are wonderful place to go when you need help in that manner.

We had to make modifications to my MIL house when her walking became a lot less stable. We definitley made sure both smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors were installed. We switched out the standard lightbulbs for ones that were motion sensitive. Light switches became no longer an issue. Grab bars, a lift chair/recliner was bought and all throw rugs tossed. We also had the alarm company provide a life alert pendant with a button she pushed if an SOS situation arose. I suggest looking to goodwill or another organization to the like for items they are willing to donate to you if money is an issue. If they don't have anything maybe they can point you in the direction of someone who does. Hope this was helpful to someone. Good luck and blessings to all.

The only financial help that might be available is if the disabled person is a disabled veteran. Under certain circumstances theVA will install stair lifts, grab bars , etc.

Is there any way to get financial assistance to make these very necessary modifications? Mom needs more space, a handicap shower, a handicap ramp and more closet space. We just can't afford to do any of it and never can she?

This is a good article for what it covers. But building an apartment on to one's home is not a solution that is feasible for the majority of people who care for a parent.

I am looking for options for my father who can no longer do stairs,. We cannot afford such things. Right now we are thinking of putting him in the dinning room since it has a door for privacy, but that leads to where do we the(5) of us eat and what do we do with the china cabinet, table and other furniture in the dinning room.
