This a wonderful article. I wish I had heard of this when my Mother passed away. I have been to two funerals that did have this type of idea. One funeral was for a cattle rancher. His well worn boot were placed in the center of his lariat with cowboy hat up against the boots. This was in a local park. His friends who came to celebrate his life, shared stories of their relationship with him. Many of the stories were similar to ours, depicting him as a person who never hesitated to help a friend or neighbor in need. A meaningful experience for his family and his friends.

Dilbertz, not a bad idea but a scanner is going to give a cleaner image and I beg to differ - it may not be as easy as using your phone but should be much easier to get good results. Shoebox is really handy but unless you're paying them monthly, they store at a reduced resolution so they won't be print quality.

Scanning photos with a conventional scanner can be daunting and time-consuming, especially when you have scanned hundreds and then need to crop them one by one. An easier option is to use iPhone or iPad and an app like Pic Scanner (itunes.apple/us/app/pic-scanner/id644278663) or ShoesBox (for Android). This method will even let you scan photos directly from albums, and crop them automatically.

Nice article and the suggestion to scan family photos is an excellent one. But a serious issue is missed here. One crack of the disc and those photos are gone. Paper photos are even more susceptible to damage or loss.

The best bet is to scan all photos then upload into permanent online storage. That way they are safe and easy to share. They can be printed at will.

I recommend myfamilyvault as they are the online online storage out there that charges one fee upfront so there's no worry about ongoing payments and their storage is insured to guaranteed 100 years of access. That way the photos are their for your children and their children, and their children. Don't forget to share with your siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins who may also want copies.
