I would venture to assume that the 5-fold increase in death was due to last effort referrals to protective agencies. It is doubtful that it was the "self-neglect" behavior that led to the 5-fold increase. It is more likely the result of a terminal illness, in it's late stages, at which time the person was reported.

I saw how much familiar surroundings matter. Keeping in touch is important.
