Me and my husband bought a house in October and my mother is staying with us. My kids receive Medicaid and so does my mother. My mother is trying to find a place now because she thinks she’ll lose her Medicaid which helps with her doctor bills, sugar supplies and CPAP. Or she thinks she mess with the kids Medicaid. She pays for her own stuff so it’s just like she’s renting a room from us. Help!!!!

My mom lives in South Carolina and has been put on a trachea ventilator due to heart problems. While at a special rehabilation place to help wean her off of it they began doing dialysis so now they say she has to go to a lower level of care which means a special nursing home so they can continue with her weaning. Bad thing is closest one is in Maryland. I got a call from them yesterday informing me that Medicare will not cover it all and perhaps she needs to be on Medicaid. The man begins to tell me that she can't have the house in her name or the car and since she has a cd at bank that will also have to be taken away. He told me to use the cd to pay off house and car then put in my name or sell them. then tells me since she has 3000 in bank she probably won't qualify cause she can't have over 2000. He then proceeds to ask about her life insurance policies. When I said I will not underhand her on all she worked so hard to have and that she hopefully won't be there over the 100 days. We were under impression she was being sent there to help wean off vent and then move closer back to SC. He got very rude with me and told me that he feels there is no way we can pay the cost and she probably won't be approved. Now we have to worry what to do since Medicare has told the place she is at now her time is up there. Especially since the doctors have said they have done all they can on their part. I can not believe there is no place closer and I will not be underhanded with her and take over her stuff. Just don't know what to do.

We tried to save as much as we can and when I was recently laid off from my full-time teaching job, I have saved a little to cover my months of looking for jobs. Probably, by early 2018 I may find a full-time job. I was surprised when all savings account and proof of bank statements were required when I applied for Medical Assistance. Our savings will feed us just in time until I will find a full-time job again. If you have savings for future use, and you earn too little as part-time faculty/employee, how much savings should you only have to avail of medicaid? Thanks!

Warren, who told you that Medicaid can sue your Children? I do not belive that is true.

There is a lot of disinformation about the home. Yes, it is not included in assets. Yes, you can stay in your home. BUT Medicaid will place a lien against your house for your $10,000/month care bill and grab back this money from the eventual sale of your house when you die. Your house is usually the biggest asset so this is what the care facilities want. Medicaid is a great help in getting the money from your home to pass on to the care facility. You will pay the full $10,000 per month for care one way or another.

In my state, one vehicle is exempt as is the house. You can have $2000 in assets, but having a credit card with payments shouldn't matter. Call the local DHS or Agency on Aging for assistance.

New York allows 15k in assets and I think a dedicated funeral account but idr the specifics. You can send your spend down to the pooled disability trust and get up to 24 hr in home care depending on what the ltmc nurse assesses. The whole process for the lady I care for took about 2.5 months from applying to her getting services and my getting paid. There's only a month look back for in home but the regular 5 year for nursing homes.

Yes, it is true that you can keep your house. But the article fails to mention that Medicaid will put a lean against the property so your children can't sell it until they pay off your $10,000 per month nursing home Medicaid bill. If you run up a nursing home bill greater than your house is worth then Medicaid can sue your children for the outstanding balance.

Before you can get Medicaid to pay, you have to be basically indigent or promise to pay the government back as a kind of loan for your medical expenses. The nursing home will put a lien on property to also be paid back first before any proceeds go to the heirs.

In order to get approved insurance by Medicaid they will do a 5 year audit looking back on all the detailed credit card charges and cash paid out to make sure the applicant's money was used solely on the applicant. The idea is that if you can afford to pay for other people's things, you can afford to pay your own medical care...and the application will be denied until the money is returned or time elapses. You can appeal a denial but I know nothing about this.

Medicaid does not make you sell your home or last auto before going into a facility, but they will definitely sell it and keep the proceeds after the applicant passes on to repay the benefits received until all the assets are converted to cash and paid back to the government insurance program. Including the last social security check and retirement check/s. Upon death, assets become the government's because when you apply for government insurance, you are stating you cannot afford to take care of yourself, meaning anything that has value is turned into cash, including retirement and social security income. In a facility the government will authorize a very small cash allowance each month ($50?) for whatever isn't provided by the facility you are living in..

I was just told by the NJ Department of Family Services Division of Welfare that a car is NOT an allowable asset if an elderly couple are both in a nursing home. It is only allowable if one of them are still living in the community.

Why are you concerned about your assets. You have earned them and should not have to explain them to the government. If you own a home, you don't need medicare and you will not lose your house financing your medical care. Stop letting the government dictate the way you live. Get one-on-one care, stay in your home and earn a generous income.
