Faye- what is your husband's situation? Is he permanently in a nursing home or in a rehab center intending to go home? In either case the nursing home staff are expected to keep him clean and without rash. If he is expected to go home they should be training you on the techniques needed (if his diaper issues continue). Hopefully he could get to the point where his mobility/independence returns and he can get to the bathroom or commode.

Often a person with stroke cannot recover function on one side and they will be dependent on their caregiver for getting in/out of bed. And often there is a great mismatch of weights meaning the risk of injury skyrockets for both people. For many elderly couples the "caregiver spouse" is only a hair better than the person needing help. There are products that allow the stroke person to "help themselves" with bed transfers and repositioning making them independent again- and even give them a chance to build strength.

Can I add that products can also be critical for return to independence? There are many newer mobility items I see at national tradeshows that most people know nothing about. Would be glad to offer suggestions if I know the situation.

its a very good idea rehabilitation can improve a person's confidence and he should get out from the strock .

This is extremely helpful. Having a family member who suffered from a stroke and now dealing with the side effects of the brain injury actually inspired me to write a blog post about how to effectively communicate with patients with stroke patients who have aphasia.

Incidentally, anyone who is reading this from the South Florida area in need of rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing services, or home health care should visit catholichealthservices.org to get more information about their service lines. They have a lot of experience with neurological conditions such as stroke and have had excellent results as far as exceeding national recovery norms and getting patients back to independent home living.
