was your dad disabled? I have been told the only way my dad can get aid and attendance is for him to have been 100% disabled from a service related injury. This is info from the VA. He has been the sole caretaker for my 90 year old mom and his health has suffered due to not being able to leave her.

That is what happened to my Dad. Spent weeks in rehab in a local hospital waiting for a bed at the VA. Finally walked over to the VA hospital where the bed was and no one had arranged for transportation or told the hospital that the bed was available. So check the hospital yourself, don't believe what they are talking to each other - follow the paperwork path yourself.

My brother is my Dad's caregiver and he never had a problem accepting the POA at the VA. In fact, I am named as secondary POA, and the VA have come to me for signatures when my brother was not around. I don't understand why you were told that! There is something called a Fiduciary that the VA itself will investigate and establish if you were to accept your Dad's pension to manage for him if he can not handle banking himself. Please try a different source at the VA, see if you can find an advocate maybe at your local Council on Aging or something? We found that we get different answers depending on who you talk to, and it is very difficult to talk to anyone. We were calling all around trying to find out why my Dad wasn't be transferred to the VA, and when we went to the actual VA hospital where the bed was, we found out they had been holding a bed for him, but no one had told the hospital and no one had arranged for his transfer! Got to talk to different people and keep notes.
It is worth it!

If he can physically get in a car (to go to a dr) then he is not meeting the VA description of homebound. But! Homebound is NOT a requirement for Aid and Attendance. Homebound is another level of care that provides another level of dollar assistance. Everyone I talk to seems to have a different opinion, the proof is when you see the money unfortunately. This was from a very credible source and I have seen it more than once from more than one source.

He has medicare and VA benefits. His social security will continue correct. Once he is here would he be able to get help for care if able to live alone with home care.

My neighbor was in the military for 10 years and retired because he got injured. His wife was getting $2500 a month to care for him, even though she worked outside the home and he went hunting and fishing all the time. When their case was reviewed by the VA a few months ago, their stipend was cancelled. He got a job within two weeks. I just wonder how many more veterans are getting this free money when they obviously don't meet the criteria.

Unfortunately Molly unless it's transport to a Medical Facility for care he cannot get in his state of Connecticut, Medicare won't pay for transport to another state. Most insurance companies won't pay either. And if he is on state Medicaid in Connecticut, it stops at the state border and he has to requalify in Florida.

At age 83 come Dec. 22, 2016, and although I'm in relatively good/sound health as I write, (Wed. 11/09/16), I'm pleased to learn as a U. S. Army veteran discharged in the mid-to-late 1950's, I could be eligible for VA benefits , should I need such, later on. Makes me feel good to know that the nation appreciates my military-service for some 6 years way back when.

based on If expenses exceed income : (medical),caregiver, cost of NH, or Assisted living,[spouse caregiver expenses not a qualified expense] but other home care, or persons, are a qualified expense. Military Disability (or Compensation), would be income. in the case of a veteran; the amount a Vet may get is limited to the total of $1,788 ... so if a vet for example is getting $300 a month disability comp; then he/she could collect $1,378 additional.

In the question "Who is eligible for the Aid and Attendance pension?" a maximum income is defined as a requirement. I have been told we are eligible for this benefit but our Military Disability Pension places us above that maximum. Is the Military Disability Pension considered income in this example, and how reliable is this information. Thanks!

babyginger, what are you asking about looking into? the fact that they can't take all your dad's check? that should be something you should be able to check with the nursing home about, if that's the direction you're wanting to go or are you wanting home help? then, yes, you could check into the Aid & Attendance program through the VA, but, first, just asking to be sure - do they not have any assets to help? truly only have their checks, just seems a little unusual for a Vietnam vet; usually see that more in the older WWII and Korea ones and since there are so many of those, although there are getting to be less and less, not sure how much of a priority the Vietnam ones would be at this point, although they are considered disabled at age 65 and the fact your dad is in the VA healthcare system could be a help, especially apparently considering your dad's medical condition; is his VA doc on board with him needing help; that could also be where you would need to start, but this is a means based program so let's be sure about their finances first, that they truly have no assets or means to help themselves, k?

babyginger, when one spouse of a couple goes in a nursing home the other one is allowed a community spouse allowance such that the nursing home can't take all of that person's check if the other one - in the community - needs it to live on - check into it

My Dad was in Navy 4 years during Vietnam. He & Mom live off his SS $1,000 month and hers $500 month. Dad gets VA healthcare and Mom is on Medicare. Dad NEEDS to go into NURSING HOME or have HOME HELP with daily living and it's wearing Mom out and she's having trouble keeping up. She has lower back issues. Dad thinks nursing home would take all of his SS, leaving Mom with only $500 month to live on. Neither one of them will move in with me. Is there any help for them? Thanks.

Decatur, do you know what are considered the ADL's that have to be provided?

Overwhelmed3:

IN IL there has to be care provided, assisted living (AL) provides the care as part of their living plan (ADL's), in IL there are none provided, so there has to be a contract with someone, providing ADL's.

My dad served in WWII. He is unable to live independently and we have been caring for him for 4 yrs. Due to our age, we require other options and are considering placing him in an independent living facility with staff present and available to assist. He presently is receiving Rural Health Care and the team sees him monthly. Additionally he has home care through VA for three hours a day five days a week. We have applied for pension but have not received notification. The social worker told me that he qualifies as he has no assets and his SSI is $1300 per month. My concern is if he will be awarded pension if he is in independent living? Also, I know caregivers will follow him to a nursing home, but will they follow him to independent living facility. If he receives the pension, we won't go broke spending our retirement income to place him in the facility. I'm afraid to move forward because I fear that the labels of IL versus AL may disqualify him. If we do place him, I will need to use the retroactive payment to reimburse myself for the financial hit. This is very scary to me as I don't want to go broke. Do you have an idea as to the amount of compensation he may get and how long it will take to process? Don't want to make any technical mistakes
