i am beyond depressed as to the toll home caregiving has cost my husband and I. However; because it is our parents...I would do it all again. do you feel like no matter where you turn for help...you get "call this number, they should be able to help you." "We will send you some information. Then, fill out the form/forms (seems like 5000 pages) and we will get back to you." WHO HAS TIME FOR ALL OF THAT? Pay me a home visit and help me. I just want to SCREAM!!!

This program only for Medicaid recipients , what about Medicare recipients,I am taking care of my 96 year old mother with Parkinson, all the benefits seem to go to Medicaid instead of people who have worked all their whole lives. There seems to be no help if you choose to work, instead of stay home and collect free benefits.

I have a question......I live in the house and co-own it with my mom.....I have been the sole and primary caregiver for over 4 years.....I have POA and handle all financial and medical decisions.......today I was told I can not be a paid caregiver due solely to a background check and a felony....but to continue caring for my aging sickly parents for free because I am doing a great job......so I am not trusted enough to be paid for all my hard work but I am trusted enough to work for free and not be able to get a real job to build my own social security credits becuase this is a 24 hour job with 2 parents.......how is this even legal? I live in Florida.

It's unfair and ridiculous that a spouse does not qualify as a paid caregiver in the state of Florida! I've had to cut my hours ijn half AND take a job out of my field to reduce stress because of my caregiver responsibilities at home! When I'm at work, my mind is on my husband here, at home. This is shameful! We may have to divorce so I can be a paid caregiver or move to a state that recognizes my dilemma! Thanks Florida for taking my tax dollars for 30 years!

Most of the people who end up on Medicaid have already spent down many thousands of dollars for care. Once their money runs out, as happens to nearly anyone who didn't have long-term care insurance in place from decades before, then they qualify for Medicaid.

Medicaid is very limited, so it's nice to stay off of it, but it is a safety net. I hope that all states begin to offer more help in some form, including to those who have not yet spent every penny they've saved. Few families can afford many years of long-term care without losing most of their life's savings.

Some states are better than others for senior care - especially when it comes to quality of care homes - so we need to stay on our state's if we want to see that improve.

Is this program only for Medicaid? What if anything is available to Medicare?

It seems that those on Medicaid get all the benefits but I am on Medicare so therefore I qualify for nothing. I paid into SS all my working life but those on welfare get all the benefits and they never paid into SS. Thanks for nothing.

I think this program is called Community First Choice now, under the Affordable Health Care Act, and there are no waiting lists.

I think this program has become the Community First Choice program now under the Affordable Health Care Act. But I don't understand how one becomes the family caregiver under this program. I know that one has to apply for Medicaid first, but then the process is not clear to me. I'm asking in relation to my wife's 84 year old mother.

I am a caregiver also, I find it hard to believe that Consumer Directed Care program is only offered to Medicaid and not MEDICARE. My husband is older than I am and although I work full time I'm not in a management level job and we just make the bills. At this time I'm applying for FMLA to enable me to care for him since he returned from the hospital and the visiting nurses have stopped - but what can we do? I don't think it's fair at all that we cannot be offered the same opportunity.
I just finished caring for both of my parents, both passing away within a year of each other - I had home caregivers in place for them, my parents had saved enough that they could afford to stay in their home and I used just about every cent they had to do so. But my husband and I are not in that financial shape - any suggestions, I am a good 8 years away from Medicare and his health is not good.

DebCrig, I'd suggest that you go to aging.gov and find Kentucky under state services. You'll find a link there that will lead to you to your state's services. Most should have contact information. Our system is so state specific that each of us is left on our own to some degree, but this new site is a boon.
Good luck,

I have a sister who is in stage 4 renal failure and wants to stay at home or come to my home to be cared for. My question is will or can I get paid through the Medicaid system for her care in Ky ? She lives an hour & 1/2 away from where I live so travel would be involved if she stays at home for her care ..She will probably need 3-5 days per week of dialysis.

I haven't read all of the comments and such but I will add this. The DPOA my mother had drawn up with her attorney before she got sick allows me to be compensated for my time and expenses. It does not give an amount. I pay my husband $200 a month for yard work and house maintenance. I feel he deserves it because he quit his union roofing job to be here with me to help out. Where I live it's very very difficult to find a job. He does what he can to find work and has started to actually made enough to pay for his own expenses. So now I've only been paying him about every other month depending on how he's doing and how much he has done here. I make sure to keep a log of what he has done and have looked into what it would cost me to hire someone to do what he does. I do this even though I don't have to. It just gives me peace of mind if anyone should say anything. I don't pay myself anything because I can afford all of my bills for my house (which I left to move in with her) but as stated my DPOA allows me to pay myself or hire anyone as I see fit.

I'm happy that you find the Agingcare so helpful, Bellgirl32708.

There are wise people on this forum from all over the country which helps us all since senior care is so state specific. I'm afraid that your question will fall into this category.

It's wonderful that Florida has Cash and Counseling - I wish all states did. However, the administration will be in the hands of the state, so I'd advise you to go to Florida's website and type in the word aging. You'll come upon a full list of services that they offer. From my search, I saw that they are still expanding programs on a county by county basis, so this is still a work in progress. Still, you should find contacts who can answer your questions specifically related to Florida.

I wouldn't be surprised to see someone from Fla. answer you here, so stay tuned.

Keep us update so we know how you are doing!

My parents are also getting on in years and my oldest child is now there to take care of them. I inquired about this program and my parents are on a waiting list as they were qualified which was great. They live in Florida. I was wondering maybe you would know the type of pay they would receive and how long the process takes and the next step after qualifying? They also said something about food stamps and a stipend each month of $106. I wonder if that's until they straighten out the care amount as my father needs my son 24/7. This website is so helpful!!!

I hope that your state offers Cash and Counseling. At the time this article was written, only 13 states did. I'm not sure that this number has grown. It would make so much sense if all states offered this freedom of resources and in the end it would save money, but it's slow going.
Best of luck,
Carol

Excellent article! Finally, after searching for a long time on the internet, I stumble onto this article. I've gone four years now, without a job and no money making conditions to speak of. Embarrassingly, my wife works while I stay home to care for my mother. So now, I can look to see if I qualify for this program. Thank you for shedding the light!

Type the name of your state (in your case Alabama) and the word disability into your browser. Your should come up with a long list of links. Check each one out to see where you can get some help.

Also, I'd see what your state has to offer to help with the children still under 18. If your husband is on Medicaid, you may - only in some states but you can check - get paid for some hours. It won't be a lot and many states won't do this. I hope that you can get some help.

Blessings,
Carol

Hello, I'm new to this site but find it interesting. I live in Alabama my husband and I have 8 children 4 of whom are grown 4 under 18. In 2011 my husband had a accident where he broke his spinal cord, c4,c5,c6and c7 which left him to be a quadriplegic, and me to care for him 24/7. I was on my to taking some classes but before i could start this happens. He is omly 46 yrs old we've been married 23yrs and i love him and i am tired, income wise with rent being 800 a month bills running 8 to 900 a month buying clothes shoes going back and forward to doctors buying gas and when food stamp run out buying food buying school supplies for kids the income he had was our only income see that i would have had to pay more for childcare if i was to work outside the home. So Social security just isn't enough. How can i as caregiver get paid. God Bless

dlneely, majority of grown children do not get paid for caring for their elderly parent, unless the parent is financially able to pay from their own pocket. If a parent can afford to pay you, the parent might as well hire a certified trained caregiver… thus allowing you to keep or look for a full-time job so that your own retirement fund will grow .

If your parent qualifies for Medicaid, the State could allow a trained Caregiver from an Agency to come in to help a couple hours a day. There are some States that might pay a relative to care for an elder, it’s worth checking out. Check to see if Florida has the "Cash and Counseling" program. Note that each State has their own rules, regulations, and programs. Some have waiting lists.

Also, check with your local Council on Aging to see what programs they offer, such as an Aide coming to the house. https://www.agingcare.com/local/Area-Agency-on-Aging
