A wonderful service that I have found and used in the greater Atlanta area for wheelchair and medical transportation is Caring Ride. They are a pleasure to work with and the drivers who have transported my mother were great.

Transportation and companionship for senior citizens. Door-to-door assistance NOT CURB-TO-CURB.
I am so happy I was able to get Envoy America for my grandmother. The company was new and is growing in several states. I was able to call and schedule rides for my grandmother to the doctor, grocery store, shopping and any place she needed to go. She was assisted from her front door to the car and also they assisted her in the grocery store as well. She was treated the same as if I were the one taking her, so she not only had transportation but companionship.
I live in San Antonio, Tx so I was fortunate to have their services here. They specialize in transportation for senior citizens that no longer can drive for their self.

I am one of those "seniors" I did not give up my license, I still have it and it is valid, my problem is I---- Can't afford a car----but really hate reliying on others to go shopping, get to church, just get to a movie once in a blue-moon. How do I get to beable to go where and when I want, need to?

Ask any care giver who travels with a senior who has multiple medical issues and they will tell you it is both fatiguing and challenging. There are many obstacles to overcome especially if you add dementia to the list.
One alternative is to let someone else do the work if you can afford it. One experienced company you can hire provides a medical motor coach with one or two professional drivers depending on the distance. They can even provide a nurse at your bedside for the entire trip so you don't have to deal with the diapers. Oh, and the bed is a hospital bed with a therapeutic constant air-flow mattress so one doesn't end up with bedsores. A private bathroom is easily accessible so one does not need to get on and off the coach every hour if needed. And a full kitchen allows for hot drinks, cold drinks and snacks. A blender is available for those on a special soft food diet. The coach is equipped with an oxygen concentrator plus back-up O2 tanks and a generator in case of a loss of power. Large scenic windows right next to the bed make the ride much more interesting for the passengers. The coach has just about anything one might need. And the team comes right to your living quarters. Plus there are no time-tables to meet.
Did you mention you need your car trailored to Florida? They do that too. They tow the car behind the motor coach. It's just another way for seniors to travel without the stress.

I think that this is such a great idea. It made me so sad, a few years ago, when my mom was still alive, because she got to a point in her life when she just couldn't drive! It was just too much of a risk to have her on the road. But at the same time, she needed to grocery shopping, and liked to get out of the house. I couldn't say that I blamed her. The last year of her life we decided to put her in a health center, and thankfully they took great care of her and didn't need to go grocery shopping on her own, and was able to talk walks to get her out in the sunshine.

Yes. I have heard of wheelchair van company. They accommodate my mom from the NH to her drs appointment. The NH has a requirement for a family member or a friend to drive with her to the appointment. I suggest to check in your area and see what they can do for you. it's not the quietest ride, but it sure gets you there.
Hope that helps .

Yes, they can use the auto train. You can contact amtrack for the details.
I hope this helps. Parents do not know the meaning of take it slow. You could also hire a diriver. I hope this helps.

My parents who are both 79 yrs old, each year travel from Pittsburgh PA to Florida.
My Dad is not a good driver anymore and Mom is ok but worry very much for her to take all the driving. They do know to take it slow and do it in a few days but it still makes me very nervous. Are there transportation alternatives to get them and their car to Florida?

thanks
