My mother seemed very capable during the day, especially when we visited my brother. After my father died, my brother tried to help me out in taking care of her by taking over her finances. She fought him by having me get a lawyer to battle my brother for guardianship. However, during the night, usually once every couple weeks, she would go through agitation spells where I would have to take her to 24-hour fast-food restaurants to calm her down. It was just so frustrating. Now, she has deteriorated to the point where she is going to have to go to a nursing home and, since, I have been her primary physical caretaker, yet I have been financially dependent on her, I am now worried that I'll be on the streets because her agitation and lack of trust of others would not allow for more gradual lessening of my financial dependence on her. What a mess for me!

More medicaid assisted livings are needed on long island! It stinks when your mom needs to be placed but doesnt need a nursing home. That's where i had to put her. She would benefit from a non hospital environment.

My mom lived in an assisted living 6-bed home in an upscale neighborhood in Indialantic FL. It has end of life care at the same rate ($3600 mo.) until they pass. She received excellent loving care until she died (Sept 29, 2015) of Alzheimer's related issues. Her pension and Social Security paid 95 percent of the cost alone. She had a room mate, which she objected to at first, but who quickly became a comfort. I found this unadvertised home through "A Grand Daughter's Promise" started by a woman whose own grand mother had died due to neglect in a large nursing home. She is dedicated to finding the just right place for our elders. I will be forever in her debt.

Assisted living is not affordable because you can't use medicaid when the money runs out.

Given the need for housing seniors with Alzheimer's/Dementia, many communities are starting to build or convert existing space to become more suitable for such residents.

I feel for you. My Mom wants to stay in her home and not go to a "home". I found a wonderful in home service in NW Connecticut called Amy's Angels. The aid are kind, respectful, caring and knowledgeable. You may be able to find such a service through your local VNA Hospice service.

Has anybody had a poor experience concerning their family members who currently reside or have resided in a specialized dementia unit in an assisted living facility particularly in the New York area. Looking to share experiences and hear from people who found the facilities inadequately staffed and inadequately trained to provide the care that their loved ones required.

You sound like a good place, I had up to 20 people with all stages of alzheimers and dementia and most of the time it was 10 to 15 at the time. By the law in NC we could have up to 20 no matter what conditon they were in.
I am now retired and I miss my residents, but i don't miss the facilities.
I am glad that you are out there to help some , it is a start. Thank you for being there for those that need you.

I am owner/provider of Residential Care in Wa state and I take care of late/end stage of dementia. So, not just nursing homes and/or skilled nursing facilities are qualified for taking care of these cases. We are trained, certified to take care of any elderly with Dementia and Mental health condition. The only difference is we charge way less than NH's and/or SNF's and the ratoi is 1 caregiver per 3 Residents. We do not accept people who are having behaviors who puts in danger other Residents or themselves. We have geriatric doctor visits monthly or as needed as well as visiting nurse. So, we are prepared and qualified to take care of all these challenging people, we loving and devoted. Most of us have 2 caregivers a day to handle 6 Residents. That's the maximum of Residents we are allowed to offer caregiving services in home like environment by the Wa state law. We are inspected by the state unannounced visit at least once a year.
