Assisted living facilities are a type of housing that provides services for elderly people who need help with personal care such as bathing, dressing, mobility or meal preparation, but who do not have severe medical problems and do not require doctor, medical and nursing care. Residents must pay for assisted living costs themselves or use long-term care insurance. Medicaid and Medicare do not pay for assisted living.
