I have an elderly relative, a WWII vet, who now needs nursing care. He went to a nursing home for rehab after an infection, but has not progressed since then, and has gotten weaker. He is 98 years old, and since this episode has become no longer able to reliably get up and move around (i.e. bathroom or feeding himself). The Nursing Home wants him to leave after Medicare stops paying. Apparently they only pay for a certain number of days.They are saying that they won't take new Medi-Cal patients. The VA says that a vet has to have been disabled before discharge and they won't take him. His assets are nearly gone, and no one can provide a bill for the amount already incurred.

If family members want you to help, you need to speak to the social worker at the facility . All else is hearsay.

What is wrong with this country? And this facility....for that matter the discharge person? He is 98 years old, he is a veteran of WWII and no one will help him???? I know there are a lot of problems with the VA and all, but my gosh I thin k I would tell them all that I was going to tell the media just how 'well' the system was treating this aged veteran! And be sure to name names! These men and women (all veterans) put themselves in danger for us and this is how they are treated? This just makes me so mad!!! :-( Both my father and my husband are veterans and the way we treat them as a country is just disgraceful.

This sounds like it would be appropriate. I will suggest calling the VA for an "enrollment coordinator" and "patient care coordinator".

Unfortunately, I am getting info second hand from the relatives attempting to manage the situation. They are now saying that they never get to talk to an actual "social worker". They talk to the Discharge Planner, who simply says "you need to find a place for him to go". The current facility does "officially" take Medi-Cal patients, but it seems like they ust don't want him to stay when he goes on Medi-Cal. Someone (not at the facility) has suggested that Medi-Cal pays less, and perhaps that is why they are not being particularly helpful with applications? What is the best way to find a social worker?

The social worker or discharge planner dept.needs to help you find a facility that accepts MediCal. Vets who served during a conflict and honorably discharged are eligible for Aid and Attendence. Ask the social worker to help you find a home that will take him and assist you in applying for the benefits he's eligible for

The social worker is doing their job by telling you that medicare only covers a limited number of days. That does not necessarily mean that they will not help you find a nursing home that takes medicaid as well as getting you started in getting medicaid for him.

Medicare only pays for 90 days.

I think the VA is not telling you the truth. Look at some articles about getting benefits for vets on this site.

It covers the veteran and the veteran's spouse.

Find a nursing home that will take medicaid for it sounds like he would soon qualify. Once you find a nursing home that will take medicaid talk with the social worker there about helping you get medicaid for him.
