I speak with my mother over the phone (long distance situation). She has heart failure and possible early dementia (one doc said maybe) so it is hard to know.

Here is what is happening. She talks to me over the phone and in the middle of conversation she will be talking about something entirely different and unrelated to what I "think" she was talking about before. So I stop her and ask her "are we still talking about so and so? and she will say ""no, now we are talking about such and such". And, I am totally lost and confused. This happens a lot and I was wondering if anyone has experienced feeling lost and confused over what they are saying. Thanks.

Having not heard the conversation it would be difficult to tell if your mom has dementia or not. It could just be age-related cognitive decline.

But if the conversations you are having with your mom are not typical of the conversations you've had with her in the past she may have dementia. Has she been evaluated?

I should tell more. She has heart failure, pretty advanced. She was very loving and easygoing person and we were very close. Now, most times, she is depressed, complains a lot (I understand why/a lot of hard stuff has happened), but she hurts me (never did in her life) and will bring up hurts from long, long ago about what I did and I had apologized for. Also has called me mean and nasty and all of this hurts. She criticizes my siblings, but it is just the "truth". And of course, criticizes me too and it is just the "truth". It's so hard to put my finger on all these changes. I know she does not tell others what she tells me .. not about how sick she feels because they will not listen. They will stay on phone a few mins and hang up. She forgets and repeats but NOT in the same conversation. Usually this is over a period of days. She will be told some information, lets' say, 3 days ago and 6 days ago and today she does not know it. It is not memory loss from minutes to minute. So hard to explain this. At docs, bro takes her and he does all the talking so they don't hear much from her and don't pick up on it. Maybe it is me imagining things. Me getting lost in her conversations (only thing is it was NOT like this 10 years ago or even 5 years ago. I often am left completely confused over what she has said. Hope this makes some sense, because I feel lost. I don't have POA and doc will not tell me anything. Bro and I no longer talk/his choice, not mine. Thank you.
