Carol Bradley Bursack, Aug 22, 2011

Over the span of two decades author, columnist and speaker Carol Bradley Bursack cared for a neighbor and six elderly family members. Because of this experience, Bradley Bursack created a portable support group, the book "Minding Our Elders: Caregivers Share Their Personal Stories."

If she is on Medicaid, the state may have a policy like Medicare F (supplemental) for a very small fee. This will depend on the state. I'd call her Medicare/Medicaid person (local Social Security office should get you there), and ask what she needs to do. On Medicaid, much is paid for, but there are still some co-pays. You'll want to be clear about her needs and see if you can get her on this policy. Some states have it automatically part of the package and free. My state charges $40, but that is far less than BCBS's policy.
Take care,
Carol

my understanding is that if the supplemental insurance policy is cancelled then Medicaid will pick it up, but then that money will be included in the portion that is paid towards the care in AS or NH. All income except for $40 ,in some states, must be paid towards care and then Medicaid picks up .

Caution: The Medicare Social worker may not look at all perspectives, The Medicare Soicial worker may only be considering what she/he feels should be "collected" as a maximum upfront amount. If Mom has a Supp Policy& and has income from SS or Pension, then the cost of the Policy can be taken out of the dollars that would normally be 'given over' to Medicaid.
In a medical event this will save both the state and feds money, and may actually lead to a better quality of care.
