My mother has advanced dementia. She is 86. I took her to the dr. Same dr she has had for over 30 years. I had a detailed list of her current health problems and new anxiety and phobias. He did routine labs and EKG. Refused to acknowledge the other issues and treat her with meds. Said I didn't have medical poa and since mom said she was fine, he couldn't take my word for it. Using Hippa law as reason. What should I do? It is an ordeal to get her to a dr .

What a jerk! If mom has psychiatric symptoms, i would take her to a geriatric psychiatrist. Don't ask her; take her to lunch and just stop in. Alternatively, find a geriatrics doctor; fax him your lust of concerns before her appointment.

If mom is ever hospitalized, get a psychiatric consult. Antidepressants have changed my mother's life.

Well, it's too late to get POA, that ship has sailed. Therefore, I guess you might apply for guardianship. You will have to hire a lawyer to do this, so if your mother has any income, use it.

HIPAA is so misunderstood, even by doctors. They are so fearful of being fined if a marketing company gets medical information that should be private.

Guardianship is not easy and there are reports that have to be filed and records that have to be kept, but it may be your only option.
