Our father has COPD and our mother was caring for him. She has gone into renal failure and in/out of hospital. She may need transplant eventually. My sister is taking the brunt of caregiver load for both, and has had to quit her home daycare to be available for parents. The loss of $600 a month is a big hit to her family income and parents do not have savings. We cannot afford for outside services to help and my sister would prefers to be there. Please tell me if there is any funding to help offset gas and time for my sister to care for parents.
Thank you so much.
Jenn

Jenn, but your sister had to quit her job to help take care of your parents. Before you know it, your sister will be at your parents house full time. Time for Plan B.

my parents wont move anytime soon. mom is going to hospital tomorrow for dialysis to start and then maybe rehab to get strenght back, to be more self sufficient. so i dont think a full time facility is needed at this time. but mom did everything for dad and around house. so sister is now coming over everyday to check clean meals laundry etc.. for them. it reallt is just one shift at this time, dad can make it to bathroom and dress shower etc for self now for most part. at some point they will have to move. but i and my other sister will not let our one sister burnout. we are a very close family and help each other as much as we can. this kidney failure that has just happened to mom is new to us only two months in. but since erin took front line to care for them i am trying to help her do it, she has her own two boys and thank goodness a wonderful and supportive husband. i do thank you foe you response and time, it has given me info for thought.

Jenn, is there any reason why your parents aren't thinking about some type of continuing care facility? Eventually your parents will need 3 separate caregiving shifts. Will you be able to do one 8-hour shift each day? And another relative do the 3rd 8-hour shift? Otherwise, if your sister tries to do all three shifts, she will destroy her health. One out of every 3 caregiver dies leaving behind their love one. You sister will need to think about that if your parents dig their heels in refusing to move.

Medicaid will cover probably one paid outside Caregiver to come to the house but they won't cover all 3 shifts... Medicaid would prefer to place your parents into a continuing care facility.

I don't know of any, but it sounds like your parents might qualify for medicaid. This is a common question on this site and those who go this route which is a common story on this site end up in financial ruin and very often in extremely poor health themselves due to giving 24/7 care.
