Give a Hug
Feb 14, 2010
I've been through this with my parents and one thing I'd advise you to do is to proceed gently. Gently explore the idea with her, and as best as possible try to make it become "her decision" to make the move. In my case, I also prayed, because being an only child, I felt I lacked "power" trying to persuade both my mother and my father that they needed to move, when they were both against the idea. It was apparent to me and my husband that it was past time for them to make this move. God helped me with this situation. We got to the point where Mom and Dad were digging in their heels and refusing to put themselves on a waiting list to get into a senior facility. In desperation I went to God in prayer, and only days later Mom and Dad experienced a fall, both falling at the same time, and this scared them so much that the next day they called the senior facilty and put their names on the waiting list. Within six months, they were moved in. ( My husband and I helped them empty their house and make the move to the new place.) Good Luck.

Forgot to say that my parents thankfully were not injured in the fall they experienced, so it worked out as being a "signal" to them that it was time to move. Obviously it is so much better if we can gently persuade our elderly parents that it is in their best interest to move into assisted living without them having to come to a crisis point to convince them it's time.
