Mother was switched to Plavix which the director of nurses said was more expensive than coumadin. Can a nursing home use generics?

Is the savings being passed on to your mother? If so, then that's a good thing right? But, are Plavix and Coumadin created equal? Although I've heard of both drugs, I've never heard of one being substituted for the other. But then what do I know....
