Are nursing homes allowed to use generic drugs for their patients to save money?

Mother was switched to Plavix which the director of nurses said was more expensive than coumadin. Can a nursing home use generics?

Is the savings being passed on to your mother? If so, then that's a good thing right? But, are Plavix and Coumadin created equal? Although I've heard of both drugs, I've never heard of one being substituted for the other. But then what do I know....
