Friend of a friend; his mom is in her 90s in a NYC hospital. She reportedly hasn't had a bm in 11 days, white lesions in her mouth. She lives alone. Hospital is saying she needs to be dishcarged and they are not presenting any viable care plan. I've told him to stand fast and refuse discharge. Any other advice?

Your advice to your friend was right on. Stand strong and refuse to have her discharged. Your friend can say that he can't take care of his mom at home. But her issues need to be addressed as well. No BM in 11 days is never good.

DO not accept discharge!! They will nag, demand harrass that family or DPOA etc take discharge as it is in hospitals interest to only stabilize patient and get them off the books before they get sick or get a secondary infection etc. your friend should insist on a mtg with the care team and social worker with the doctor and discuss prognosis and moms situation at home and a care plan. They will try to just insist that it is totally your friends responsibility but drs and care team can arrange for visiting nurses, OPT, etc. to help with recovery or send her to rehab, etc.

Tell friend to stand strong. Many of us have learned the hard way.
