My mother has started using profanity and losing her temper with anyone who can't immediately answer questions or provide help when she feels she should get it. Her overall health is good (high b/p, well-controlled diabetes), she still drives and lives alone. While no immediate family is nearby, she has a strong network of friends with whom she's in contact daily. My sister and I have noticed this change in the last year.

I agree, talk with her when she is calm and she hows shes feeling if any different. Also, a Dr visit as mentioned. If she is on meds, is there any chance they may be affecting her now even if though they may have not before? Good luck

She is showing a lot of anxiety. Find out what is upsetting her and maybe talk to her MD about anxiolytic medications. You may be looking at the early stages of dementia. Get her a good check up.
