Hi my name is Josie. I have a question on what to do to find out what was in both of my grandparents Will and my inheritance. I KNOW they left me and my sisters money and valuables since my father talked about it ALL the time before he moved to china and left (before both died/ still lives there). My aunt told us we got nothing while her and her children got EVERYTHING. I'm not sure I can get anything now since its been years since the both of them died. I'm older now and angry that she lied and i just want to know the truth. What should i do? How can i find out what is mine? I live in North Carolina while my dads side of the family lives in South Carolina. I don't know where to start or what to do. Please help me. Also I know she left me and my sisters a college fund which would be in the will, under my name and theirs, could she take that money? and if we were just labeled without our names could she still take that money? and one last question, since its been years is there a time limit where she will get the money if i dont claim it after so long?

I have been in this situation. It is a long hard road, just take one step at a time.
First find out the facts about the will. If you were remembered in a will, then you are, in my opinion, in fairly good shape. You have just reached the age of majority.
You can go to legal aid and/or the District Attorney if indeed someone has stolen
from you. While you may feel it is wrong to taken action against another, and of course it is your decision, think of it like this. If you decide not to, the person, if the person did this, who acted against you will be emboldened, perhaps steal again and steal more. They might get caught for a greater offense and go to jail. If stopped now, should this be the case, you might be saving them from a worse fate. Just a thought. Good luck.

Thank you soo much for your advice. Like i said i am beyond lost on what to do but im determined to get this all sorted out to help me with college and to make everything right. My only fear is that the money is spent.... which if that is true and i would have to sue her to get the money then im afraid i couldn't do that. No matter how wrong and mad it makes me i dont think i could do that i would feel horrible. Also since i live in North Carolina and they live in South Carolina i very that im even more limited to what i can get ahold of and find out so hopefully the internet will help guide me there along with your advice!

even if i was young and under the age of 18? I am 19 now. My mom recently talked to me more about the subject about how she didnt have the money to do anything ect. and how it was so wrong my aunt got all of the money and as well as her children to get a car, and a college fund but we didnt get any money, our college fund or any personal belongings she/he left . My dads mother and father died and she said there was just absolutely nothing left to us from neither one of them. could i find out any way if she was lying and if there is still anything left? Because that would be stealing and she had no right to take what wasn't hers? does age make a difference or the fact that my college fund was under my name?

Addendum: Look online for the city, the county seat. Then search for the county clerk's office. Most offer free searches of the property records, probate records are often recorded in the property records. See if your county online records go back that far. If not, you can phone.

It is too late to contest a will. However, you have not seen the will. If a will was probated, it is a public record. You will find it in the probate records of the county clerk where she lived, where your family lived, look around. If you were remembered in the will, and someone took, converted, those assets for their own use, I believe the statute of limitations for various types of theft is rather long. I am not a lawyer and this is not meant to be legal advice. I suggest you locate the wills. Sorry to hear of this. Very sad and emotional stuff.

Waaay tooo late to protest. Wills have to be challenged during probate.
