We have just become my boyfriend's grandmother's caregivers. Where do we begin?

Asked by jenniferdeclue  |  Jan 8, 2010

We have just become my boyfriend's grandmother's caregivers. My boyfriend and I live with her in his parent's house. His mom just recently passed away (his father passed away 2 years ago). His mother had been the grandmother's primary caregiver, staying home with her most times (mom didn't work- disabled). We are both in our 20s, and we have been doing well this first week after his mom's death- but we are going to need help soon! We both have to work full time, and I'm going back to school as well at the end of the month. I've started researching elder day care facilities, etc. I guess I just need some ideas of where else to start- home caregivers etc. Thanks!

Carol Bradley Bursack, Jan 9, 2010

Over the span of two decades author, columnist and speaker Carol Bradley Bursack cared for a neighbor and six elderly family members. Because of this experience, Bradley Bursack created a portable support group, the book “Minding Our Elders: Caregivers Share Their Personal Stories.” Her sites, www.mindingourelders.com and www.mindingoureldersblogs

Go to your state's Web site and look under aging services. There you will find contact information. Every state has some version of the Family Caregiver Support Program. This program gets federal funding, but is run by the states, so they are not all the same. You should get some help if you start in this direction. Good luck. You sound like great people.
