In conversation my dad often can't remember a word. He is visibly frustrated by this. What is the best way to handle this. I have heard if you give the person the word, they can feel dumb. It's like the word is right there and he just can't retrieve it.
When he gets stuck and I don't have a clue where he is trying to go I usually very gently change the subject to a sure thing, like the weather. " Sure is hot today". And away we go on someting he can deal with, forgetting about the word or name he forgot earlier.
