How do I get my mom to wear her "Magic Underpants?"

Asked by sMiLe  |  Jul 26, 2011

My mom just started wearing her "Magic Underpants" but she keeps taking them off before bed, and then putting her panties on but the result a wet bed in the morning. I understand that she might not be used to them yet, but can I get some advise on how to convince her that her "Magic Underpants" are really good for her?

Over the span of two decades author, columnist and speaker Carol Bradley Bursack cared for a neighbor and six elderly family members. Because of this experience, Bradley Bursack created a portable support group, the book "Minding Our Elders: Caregivers Share Their Personal Stories."

It's often a struggle to get an elder to wear protection for incontinence. I love your use of "magic underpants - your are very creative, and are doing the number one thing people need to do, which is you are trying to preserve her dignity and not calling them "diapers."
Are they comfortable? Is a different size needed? Maybe it's just the extra bulk that makes her take them off.
A size or brand change may help. Keep telling her how much more comfortable it is to wake up in a dry bed. Let her know that many people wear these magic underpants and then they don't have to struggle.

Could you wear them, too, for awhile? Let her know the "help you", too? Would that work? It's just a thought.

I agree with all the advise of Minding Our Elders! I also love the creative "Magic Underpants" Believe me sometimes I could use some of those myself!

In addition to Carol's good advice, what if her undies drawer contained nothing but magic pants?

What if she wore her 'magic drawers' under her regular panties?
