Obama Proposes Medicare Changes to Help Reduce Deficit

Though they won't take effect until 2017, the Medicare changes proposed by president Obama could have a substantial impact on future beneficiaries. The recommended changes include:

  • For new beneficiaries:
    •  A $100 copay for home health care, unless you're coming off a stint in a nursing home or hospital
    •  A required deductible if you sign up for significant Medigap insurance
    •  A higher yearly deductible for outpatient services
  • For beneficiaries falling into the high-income bracket:
    •  Greater monthly payments for prescription coverage and outpatient services

In a recent speech, the president outlined his proposal for reducing the national deficit—a plan that includes trimming some of the fat off of federal programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.

The suggested changes to Medicare mainly target new and higher-income beneficiaries and, together, they are projected to cut $248 billion in govenment spending.

Couple these cuts with proposed reductions to Medicare payments for medical professionals and pharmaceutical companies, and the outlook of health care for the elderly may seem a bit bleak.

Max Richtman, President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare says that the suggested plan simply dances around the true problem, "Raising premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs for seniors doesn't address the real challenge facing our nation but merely shifts costs to retirees who are losing an increasing share of their Social Security checks."

But, in a published reaction to Obama's proposal, the AARP points to two key wins for seniors; the Medicare retirement age would remain at 65, and Social Security would not suffer any cuts. They also point out that the, if implemented, the plan would not impact the elderly as much as it could have.

Obama's proposal is far from becoming a reality—it must first face the gauntlet of a Congress staunchly opposed to the tax increases the president has linked to the Medicare changes.

Washington is out of control. Obama's plan will put most retirees in a position that they will not utilize their health care until they have an emergency situation simply because they won't be able to afford routine health care checkups. Health concerns will go undiagnosed until the person is critical and must be hospitalized. Of course this will cost 50 times, or more what a routine checkup would have cost. Of course how many of these poor elderly people will die because they were forced to wait for care because they couldn't afford it?? Maybe this is what people have called death panels.

We will also have to worry about finding a physician who accepts Medicare. More and more physicians are pulling out of the program because of the cuts in reimbursement. So we will be denied access to care.

Way to go Mr. President you have managed to figure out a way to reduce the numbers of we baby boomers to help bring your budget in line.

Physicians should be required by law to treat medicare patients who's only income is Social Security. Drug companies should be required by law to give medicare patients who's only income is Social Security a discount. In addition, I feel that the elderly are over-treated. That's why it's costing so much.

Why does he feel the need to take away from the elders who worked hard all their lives and paid into the system, when we have illegal alliens crossing the borders dropping "anchor kids" like flies and providing housing, financial benefits and housing to these that break the law?
It is time for a complete shake up in the government or you can kiss you freedom goodbye for our grandchildren.

I meant "medical" in place of the second "housing"

And just how is Mr. Obama responsable for the outragious costs for medical attention and treatment? Is it preferable to agree with that dolt who shouted agreement to the question as to whether someone who cannot afford insurance to just go ahead and die? The problem lies in the blackmailing practices of the medical/industrial complex in this country.

DT, spoken like a true chest thumping Democrat. You have such a naive and paranoid outlook. No one said Obama is responsible for the cost of care. What Obama is responsible for is the out of control spending currently in Washington. If he was truly interested in controlling the budget and saving Medicare he would stop the illegals from entering this country. Do you have any clue the billions that we spend on these criminals every year? Another thing he could do is put some controls on the trial attorneys. Again, do you have a clue how many unneeded tests are run every year because of these individuals? We could cut millions out of health care in the first year. Open your eyes and stop drinking the Obama kool aid.

No, as long as you want to make it an issue, you open Your eyes, Reagan tripled the size of government and Bush ran a surplus form Clinton into the ground and sent the economy into a down spiral that Republicans keep trying to sweep under a rug. Obama has been trying to swim upstream trying to straighten out the mess with a do-nothing Republican party-of -no congress who whine like little pre-teen girls who have had their cel-phone and mall privileges taken away from them. No, just for the record, I am not a chest thumping Democrat, I have voted Republican often, and often have learned to regret it. Facts are facts, everything I have said is true. Agree on the illegals, though, absolutely, but that is not what Obama started, either. He is not necessarily the only one who is courting the votes of those who protect them and encourage them. If someone is being honest the blame lies on both sides of the aisle and all Republicans do not wear halos and sport wings and all Democrats do not have cloven hooves and pitchforks.

dt - this is not a political site. It's about us, as caregivers to our elderly parents.
