Caregiver Survey

COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE:

With the 2008 presidential election looming, AgingCare.com asked our members: which of the candidates for president will best represent caregivers?

Hundreds of caregivers took the survey, and 50% say Barack Obama is the candidate who has caregivers’ interests at heart. Another 31% picked John McCain, while 19% said they are undecided.

Of course, caregiving is not the only issue at hand. Many others – such as the economy, the war, abortion, etc. – come into play during election time. Just because survey respondents think Obama will be better for caregivers, doesn’t necessarily mean they will vote for him – or does it?

AgingCare.com asked members: Which candidate are you going to vote for? The result: 48% say Obama will get their vote, 31.5% are voting for McCain, 18.5% are still undecided, and 2% say they won’t vote.

But many survey respondents say neither candidate has adequately addressed caregivers’ needs. One respondent said: “I would like to see candidates actually address the issues of eldercare and society. All other civilized countries seem to have systems that work.”

I am shocked that anyone would believe a *rebate* would help most of the people buy health insurance coverage. A *rebate* is nothing if you don't have the money - - - as a reminder to those people who do have a comfortable enough cash cushion - please consider that many families and single caregivers in particular may look like they are doing OK on the outside, but truth is that you can't spend what you don't have - especially in light of the recent economic meltdown. My only health insurance plan is "dont get sick" because I cannot afford it -

One thing nobody is mentioning is that at least under Obama's Service to America plan a very compelling and strong argument can be made that caregivers are providing a very selfless service to our country - especially at a time when healthcare costs are rising and increasingly people are being forced to choose between survival and caring for their loved ones. I for one would like to see a *rebate* in the form of 1. social security earned income credit for caregivers and 2. extending free the same coverage as government employees to caregivers who earn less than $50,000 per year, and low cost co-pay to those who earn up to $100,000. per year. In my state, by caring for my mom at home, I save the State of California and Medicare in excess of 85K a year in healthcosts. I reckon that most caregivers are in that ballpark - we should point out that we have earned our governments support.

We caregivers need to start asking for things the way many other special interest groups have done for years....regardless of which party you may be inclined to vote for Caregivers should be a force to be reckoned with in the next election - and beyond
