Q: What supplements or medications for elderly women reduce risk of memory loss and cognitive decline?
A: It is impossible to specifically endorse one "best cognitive supplement." Different women have different needs. Mobility of the stomach and bowel affects absorption of supplements. Different women also have different absorption of the foods and other nutrients they consume.
Foods or medication taken with any nutrients may also alter the absorption of a supplement. Different women may have different requirements because of their overall food intake, type of food intake, medications they use that may deplete or alter nutrients absorption. Use of alcohol either in beverages or medications can alter their nutritional needs.
My best advice is to find a good, well-rounded supplement. Look for the words "pharmaceutical grade" meaning that there is standardization and consistency in the availability of the dose. Some of the supplements may have research available that may be helpful.
Whatever supplement you choose, read the instruction and take as directed. Evaluate how you respond, considering that all other factors remain the same. If you are not responding the way you would like, try another compound. Be mindful, the most expensive supplements may not give you the best response. Consider a mid-cost supplement to start.
