The biggest problems are
No one can accept a mattress.
Most people that need hospital beds will get one provided through their insurance so very few have to buy one.
Check with your local Senior Center they may have a "lending closet' that will take a donation and they may even take the mattress particularly if it is one that is not a "fabric" and can be sanitized.
You can always place the bed on the curb on garbage day and a "scrapper" will pick it up for the metal value.
It can always go on Craig's List or Market Place and mark it "free"

Where have you tried?

I agree that FREE on craigslist or Nextdoor.com is probs best (Nextdoor at least is your local community).

After that, contact smaller church charities that have donation programs, stores and truck pick-up. I was able to find one in FL after Goodwill and Salvation Army said no.
